Chapter 9: A Journey Interrupted

The morning after the full moon, Thomas came back from hunting with a big buck.

After the feast, a memory slipped into my mind.

Maggie and I were driving in the car and I called Collie, Maggie hung up the car phone and I wondered what I'd do without her.

This is what I'd do without her... Live in the woods with my one and only true love, and a Great Dane.

Over time my arm healed so I occasionally hunted with Thomas and Hunter, side by side, three hunting machines.

"Are you ready to hunt alone?" Thomas asked me, interrupting my thoughts.

"Uh... What do you mean alone?" I asked, clearly confused.

"I mean... You could try hunting down some lunch for us, by yourself" He answered.

"Do you really think I'm ready?" I asked, lowering my head.

He lifted my chin with his pointer finger and said, "I know you're ready."

It was decided, I would set out for food within an hour.

Thomas was truly my best friend and my true love, besides, he did know everything about me, and I knew everything about him.

Earlier that week, we had discussed going back to the city.

But, like all conversations between us, it ended with "I don't want or need anything besides you."

Sometimes I had to pinch myself because this all felt like a dream.

I loved Thomas with all of my heart, and I knew he felt the same about me.

I squeezed his hand goodbye as I walked off to get lunch.

It was a quiet afternoon, and I got a strange feeling like someone was watching my every move.

A bad taste formed in my mouth, so I spit once and continued on my lone journey.

I heard a twig snap in the distance and I was shaking in a matter of seconds.

I held my bow and arrow towards the shaking bushes, ready to shoot.

A huge Grizzly Bear flew out of the bushes, and it was headed for me.

"AHHHHHH!" I screamed, jumping to my feet and running as fast as I could.

I looked back at the horrifying bear and for a second, I thought I saw Jace chasing me with a blade.

'Don't trip! Don't trip! Don't trip!' I shouted in my head.

Soon, I found my self slamming into a tree and falling to my knees.

I leaned against the tree as the bear stood just a few yards away.

My bow and arrows weren't in reach, all I could do was try crawling away.

As I started crawling, I looked up and saw Thomas behind the great beast, holding his bow and arrows.

I stopped crawling because he had distracted me.

"Annie watch out!" Thomas shouted.

Just as I looked up, claws were heading towards me.

The bear's claws sank through my stomach, I did not have enough breath to scream of pain.

I could see Thomas's reaction to the Grizzly Bear's actions was anger because he was soon pulling back his arrow.

The arrow hit the bear right around the heart, the bear let out a long wail.

Some energy was still within the Grizzly Bear, it was soon charging at me again.

Just as the bear would finish me off, Thomas stepped in front of me.

An even louder wail came out of the bear's mouth, Thomas had shot his last arrow and killed the beast.

Thomas turned to me, and I saw he had four claw marks going across his face.

It looked like it hurt a lot, I wondered if it hurt more than my bleeding stomach.

His hands were shaking as he touched my face, "Annie..." He started.

"I heard your scream and ran to you, I should have gotten here earlier, I am so sorry."

I really didn't see any point in apologizing, it was the bear that had struck me.

As soon as he saw my stomach wound he started to tear up.

"I'm gonna get you some help right away, I promise" he said picking up my limp body.

He ran to the shed quickly, to retrieve Hunter.

After an hour or so of him carrying me, I didn't see any trees as I gazed up.

I knew where we were... We were back in the city.
