Chapter 5: A Lie Worth Telling
I stared up at the hospital ceiling while my eyes adjusted to the sunlight spilling in from the curtains.
All of a sudden I realized that I wasn't in the car anymore.
I saw my mom and Maggie looking down at me.
"Honey she's waking up!" My mom shouted as my step-dad came over to me.
Why does my whole body ache, I wondered.
I sat up and saw Jace sitting in a chair on the other side of the room.
"Annie, are you alright?" Maggie panicked.
"Why..." I started."Hush Annie, don't talk", my mother said interrupting me.
"Why am I here?" I continued.
"You were in an accident on the way home from Colleen's house." My mother whispered.
I suddenly remembered Jace lifting me in my car and telling me he was falling for me too.
"Did we crash?" I asked starting to shake as I felt the pain in my left arm that had apparently been broken.
"Jace will tell you" she said as she led Maggie and my step-dad into another room.
Jace waked over and looked down at me.
"Sorry I crashed your car" he said seeming distracted by something.
Sorry for crashing my car!? Does he not see my broken arm!?!? I thought to myself.
"It's ok, I'm sure you didn't mean to." I said, sending him a smile.
"Excuse me, are you Annie?" A doctor walked up to me.
"Yes, and this is Jace" I said pointing at Jace.
The doctor looked at Jace, "Jace will you excuse us for a moment please?"
"Sure" he said going back to sit in his previous spot.
The doctor looked down at me and frowned.
"What is it?" I asked looking up at the doctor.
"This is about your friend Colleen..." He stuttered.
My heart started racing as I waited for his next words.
"The police squad examined the blade that was found in her... It did not have her fingerprints on it, it had..."
I some how managed to sit up as I heard these words.
"It had fingerprints that were, from a male Caucasian." He stuttered once again.
As I looked over at Jace I noticed he looked very nervous.
"Thank you doctor" is all I managed to say.
That night I couldn't sleep, I thought I heard the cry of other patients throughout the near hospital rooms.
Could it be him? Did he ever know Collie? Maybe he had this thing planned out this whole time, my mind raced.
About three days later after restless nights, the morning where I got to go home finally came.
As soon as I stepped into our cozy house I knew I had to question Jace about Collie.
"Hey Jace can we talk please?" I asked preparing to give him the talk of a lifetime.
"Yeah sure" he shrugged following me up to my room.
I shut the door behind me then looked into his eyes.
My mouth said the words as my mind tried to stop it, "did you do it?"
He gave me a strange look, "do what?"
"Why did you kill Collie?" I asked as a tear fell down my cheek.
"I killed her because I loved her too much, she left me for another because she thought I drank too much" he sighed.
A loud sound echoed as I slapped my hand across his face, "I can't believe it, wait a minute..." I remembered her missing necklace.
"You thief! You took her necklace didn't you?" I asked him putting it all together in my mind.
"What are you, a cop?" He rolled his eyes.
"I may not be a cop but I do know how to pack a punch" I responded smiling a bit.
He froze then took a blade out of his back pocket.
"We'll see who can pack a punch" he said chuckling.
He jumped forwards cutting my forehead with his blade, knocking me to the ground.
I managed to pull out my cellphone and dial 911.
I tried to crawl to my open door.
Jace slammed the door shut and chucked the cellphone across the room.
He held out his blade.
Just as I thought it was all over the door flew open.
The police had Jace under arrest after I explained what had happened.
I walked out of my room and bumped into Maggie.
I grabbed her risk with my good arm and led her to the door.
"What are you doing Annie?" Maggie asked trying to loosen my grip.
"I'm running away, you coming with?" I asked Maggie thinking of Collie, the blade, and school.
"I'm not coming, I won't tell mom or dad I know where you've gone... I promise." She said, her eyes getting heavy with tears.
I gave her a smile and she gave me a great big hug, I kissed her forehead.
I walked a couple yards but turned back to see Maggie just watching me, I waved my last goodbye.
Then I decided... I can never trust another boy, ever again.
