Chapter 7
“No, pizza is the most popular food in America!”
“No! It’s French fries.”
“Don’t any of you guys remember what every kid brought with them to school? Pancakes with maple syrup.”
“That isn’t even American food,” Tyler paused for a while. “I’ve got it! Chinese food.” We all gave him a look that said ‘really?’ Yes, this was our lunch conversation. Arguing about what the most popular food in America is. In the middle of our heated debate, a now familiar voice cut in.
“Can I sit with you guys?” Jeydon asked from behind me.
“Why?” Vincent asked disgusted. He wasn’t trying to hide it either.
“Yo! Jeydon! What’s up,” Tyler got up all of a sudden and hugged him in a guy kind of way.
“You guys know each other?” Zane asked.
“Yeah, we have second period History together.” He then turned to Jeydon, “C’mon bro, you can sit here,” gesturing to the seat he was sitting on just a moment ago. Which was right beside me.Really? After last night, I’m not really sure what to feel when I’m around him. First period Biology today was really awkward for me, and I don’t really know why. I mean, it was just a hug. It wasn’t like he kissed me or anything. I wonder what it would feel like if he did. No! Tori, don’t even go there! With my rambling, I didn’t even notice Jeydon already seated beside me. Well, this shouldn’t be awkward at all.
“So, what were you guys talking about?” Jeydon asked.
“What the most popular food in America is,” Zane answered simply.
“Bread, right?” he answered.
We all thought about that for a while, and agreed with him. It’s got to be bread. Now that that was settled, Mike decided to start a new conversation.
“So Jeydon, you play sports? Basketball, maybe? I’ve seen you hang out with Aaron sometimes, and you know, he’s basketball captain and all...” he trailed off. Aaron Dixon was the school’s basketball captain and its biggest player. Tall, well-built, dark brown hair and eyes. He has girls throwing themselves at him all the time.
“Yeah, I’m not on the team or anything, but Aaron and I have grown real close. We play ball together sometimes,” he answered. The next few statements, I had no idea what they were talking about. I was pretty much clueless of the sport. All I understood was that they plan to play together sometime. Other than that, all I heard were alien words to my ears.
“So, I know this is none of my business, but how do you guys know each other?” Jeydon asked.
Tyler was the one to explain. About the crew, practices, Juice Bar meetings. He mostly divulged every single detail of what we do. It wasn’t a secret or anything, but I have to remember not to trust him with any secrets. Too risky.
“You could come by later,” Tyler invented.
Vincent finally spoke up, “Is it a good idea to have other people in the warehouse?” He clearly wasn’t up to the idea of having Jeydon around more than he had to in a day.
“Well, I just thought that since we aren’t preparing for a competition or anything, he could just come by for a while. We’re only doing random routines,” Tyler reasoned shyly. I shortly wondered if he was gay, and they were boyfriend and girlfriend. He seems really persistent on having Jeydon come and watch us. Nah, I’m pretty sure he’s a dude.
We all looked at each other, having a silent conversation with our eyes. We figured that it wouldn’t hurt if he came by. It was true that we weren’t preparing anything grand and important.
“I don’t see why he can’t come,” I finally said.
Tyler suddenly sprang up and hugged each and every one of us. We all just laughed. He looked very happy. I saw Jeydon, from the corner of my eye, glance at his watch.
“I better get to class,” he said. He was about to get up and leave, when Zane’s voice stopped him.
“Tori and I will join you. I mean, we have the same class,” she explained.
“Sure,” he replied.
We got up, grabbed our book bags, and followed him to class. Zane could see I was meaning to ask her something but couldn’t ask it with Jeydon around. We passed a restroom and she told Jeydon we were just going to take a minute. He nodded understanding, and leaned against the lockers waiting for us. Zane closed the door behind her and leaned against it, arms crossed.
“Okay, spill it,” Zane said with a knowing smirk. She could tell if something was bugging me even if I didn’t say anything.
“Since when are you so excited to go to class?” I smirked back, crossing my arms.
“Hey, it’s not every day you get to walk to class with a hot guy,” Zane shrugged.
“So walking with him to class is your way of flirting with him,” I pointed out to her, feeling smug.
“It is not called flirting!” Zane said defensively. “It’s just being extra nice to someone who is...extra attractive.” She explained waving her hands in the air.
Reading her mind, I said, “And hot?”
“EXTRA hot,” she smiled widely. I couldn’t help but laugh at her being all boy crazy.
“So you like him? I asked when my laughter finally died.
“He’s handsome and hot, yes...but he’s not for me,” she said shrugging. “For you on the other hand...” she trailed off.
“Hey, I admit he’s total eye candy, but I highly doubt we will be anything but friends.” My mind went back to last night when he hugged me. How it made me slightly weak in the knees. I pushed that thought aside. It was probably just hormones. Yeah, having a hot guy around can do that to a girl. But nothing more.
“Girl, trust me...I have a sixth sense about these things.”
“Aren’t dogs the only ones with a sixth sense?” I asked innocently.
“Haha,” she laughed sarcastically. “You’ll be eating your words when you two end up together.”
“If you say so...” I said mockingly. “We better get going. In case you’ve forgotten, Jeydon is still outside because you made him wait for us. Plus, I don’t think Mr. Miller will accept ‘We were late because we were talking in the restroom’ as a good excuse as to why we’re late.
She just laughed at that, but agreed, nevertheless.
