Chapter 5

“How about this?” Zane perked up, showing me some topic on her laptop.

“We could use power mega smoothie to fertilize plants!” she said.

I gave her an ‘Are you serious’ look. She can’t seriously be thinking about using that idea. It was from a TV show for crying out loud! For kids! Which I have to admit, I still enjoy watching.

“Fine! Fine! I’ll keep searching, sheesh,” she took the laptop away from me with a huff.

“How about--” Vincent piped in. Zane and I quickly cut him off.

“No...” we groaned at the same time.

“I haven’t even said it yet!” he said, exasperated.

“We can see your screen from up here,” I simply explained. I was still lying down on the couch, using Saber as a pillow. He felt so fluffy. Zane was seated Indian style at the other side of the couch. Vincent, on the other hand, decided to sit on the floor, his back against the couch. Jeydon was sitting quietly on the chair opposite us. I kind of felt sorry for him. He seemed do out of place.

“That’s even worse than my smoothie idea,” Zane said.

Vincent mumbled something under his breath. I faintly heard him saying something about ‘not letting me finish what I want to say’. I just rolled my eyes at him. I felt Saber stir a bit from under my head, and looked at the clock. It was 7 o’clock. Oh yeah, time to feed him. I got up, and headed for the kitchen.

“I’m just gonna get Saber’s food,” I said on my way to the kitchen.

I grabbed a can of dog food and his feeding bowl. I emerged from the kitchen, and Saber got up from the couch and approached me.

“We’ve been searching for half an hour already!” Zane cried, throwing her hands in the air. “We still haven’t found a good topic.”

“BIP topics aren’t exactly the easiest thing to look for,” I said, as I opened the can in my hands. “Not that you would know...” I mumbled just low enough for her not to hear. Apparently I was wrong.

“What was that?” she asked glaring at me.

“Oh, nothing,” I said. “I just said you look really pretty today,” I said to cover up my previous statement.

“That’s what I thought,” she said with a smirk. “And for your information, I look pretty everyday.” And she made sure to emphasize the word everyday.

The guys held in their snickers, and turned back to their laptops when Zane turned to them accusingly. I just rolled my eyes at her. Typical Zane. I crouched down and poured the food into Saber’s bowl, and a light bulb just went off in my head.

“I’ve got it!” quickly jumping up. They all turned to me. “How about we make costumes, like armor, from recycled dog food cans?” I asked excitedly. They just stared at me. Did I say something wrong?

Answering my question, “Isn’t that from a Phineas and Ferb episode?” Vincent asked with a smile. Come to think of it, I just noticed how good-looking he was. Tall, messy black hair that’s not too long or short, blue eyes. Wow, did I just think my best friend was handsome? I mean I knew he wasn’t ugly, but this was just...awkward. His question finally settled in, and thought for a while.

“Yeah!” realizing that was exactly what I was thinking. “See, we’re totally on the same page here.”

“Cartoons are the best,” Zane sighs dreamily, and we all laughed at her.

“Okay, back to reality. Are we going with that idea?” I asked. Hopefully they will agree, because, I don’t know about them, but I would really like the research part to stop.

“Don’t mean to be rude or anything, but doesn’t our topic have to be on biology?” Jeydon finally spoke up.

“I hate to admit it, but I agree with pretty boy over here,”  Vincent said, clearly not happy to share the same idea with him. I think if he found a way, he wouldn’t share the same oxygen with the guy. Boy, did he have issues.

“Uhm, thanks?” Jeydon more of asked than said.

“Yeah, it’s on DOG food,” I said trying to convince them.

“I thought it was on the can,” Vincent said.

I thought about it for a while. “RECYCLED dog food cans,” I said pointing to him, with eyebrows raised. He and Jeydon both laughed at that.

“Wait, I think she’s on to something,”  Zane said, as if deep in thought.

          I AM?

“I am?” voicing out my thoughts. “I mean, of course I am, and just so I’m sure we’re on the same page here, mind telling me what I’m on to, exactly?” I asked, clearly I had absolutely no idea where MY idea is going. To my surprise, she didn’t come up with a smart-ass comeback, or even roll her eyes. This was a new side to her.

“We could use recycled materials to make props, costumes, maybe to the extent of real clothes,” Zane said. We all stared at her with awe. I was the first one to speak.

“Wow, that’s genius! And to think this all started with a cartoon joke,” I laughed.

“Of course it’s genius, I came up with it,” Zane said, clearly proud that she came up with the idea. Being the great friend that I am, I couldn’t let that happen.

“Technically, I started the cartoon thing,” I said smugly.

“Yeah, but you didn’t think it would actually make a good topic, did you?” she said, matching my smugness.

“Fine, you win, Ms. Genius,” I laughed.

“Why thank you very much, my darling,” Zane bowed.

By this time, I was becoming very aware of the two guys watching us. They were clearly entertained by our bickering. What can I say? They are in the midst of two geniuses! You know what? Scratch that. They are in the midst of two best friends. Crazy best friends.
