Chapter Thirteen: I've Been Waiting

Matt's POV

I never meant to hurt her. I was sad and lonely and I hadn't even realized it was Jessica who I was kissing. I had been longing to kiss Tessa. I thought I was kissing Tessa. I should've known. Jessica is a horrible kisser. Tessa tastes like peanut butter. Jessica taste like ass. I hate myself right now.

I start to run after her but I am at loss for words. She won't want to talk to me and if she'll actually listen, what am I supposed to say? It's not like she will believe me. I run my hands through my hair over and over. I've screwed up. I've screwed up big time. She'll never take me back. I love her and I lost her.

Tessa's POV

I reached my car and slammed the door when I got in. I backed out of the school sobbing. Tears were blurring my vision as I pulled onto the road. I stopped at a red light and turned right when I thought it was clear. It wasn't clear. The tears had stopped me from seeing the car coming. I drove right in front of it. The last thing I remember was the horn, and then everything went black.

Matt's POV

I've been waiting in the hospital since Nick called me. It's been five hours since she was placed in surgery. Twelve hours I've been waiting. They aren't letting any visitors in. They won't even let in family. Nick is worried as bad as I am. A doctor calls his name and he leaps out of his chair almost knocking it to the ground.

"Can I see her yet?" He asks frantically.

"Family only." The doctor replies.

"Nick?" I ask expectantly.

"I'll see what I can do." He replies with a half-smile.

I sit there waiting, my heart beating faster than normal. What if she dies? I will have lost her and not have been able to confess my feelings. No. she won't die. She can't die. I break down into a sobbing fit.

It's been a couple hours and Nick still hasn't come back, the doctors won't tell me anything. All I know is that she turned when she didn't have the right of way and got hit by a speeding car. That is all that is on my mind while I wait.

I fell asleep sometime while waiting for Tessa to wake up. Nick came back and told me she was out of surgery and doing fine. She was hurt pretty severely and the doctors didn't know if she would ever wake up.

I had cried myself to sleep after hearing that. It was my fault. All of it was my fault.

I haven't slept in days and sleep came easily to me. I had slept in the waiting room all night. My back and neck ache like hell. I yawn and stretch before looking at the clock on the wall. It's noon, she's been out of surgery for twenty-four hours.

I get up and ask the lady at the desk if she's seen Nick. She shakes her head and goes back to reading a magazine.

I find a nurse and stop her in the hall. "Which room is Tessa Jones staying in?"

"Name?" The nurse asks.

"Nicklaus Jones." I reply giving her Nick's full name.

"Let me check and I'll get back to you."

I return to my seat and wait for her to come back. It takes her half an hour but she finally approaches me.

"Nicklaus Jones is with his sister right now. You must be Matthew Dyllan. She's staying in room 317, although she still hasn't woken up. You may go in there if you like, but be quiet." She smiles sadly and walks away, leaving me standing there limp. She still hasn't woken up.

I walk to room 317, having already been in the third floor waiting area. I stand at the door and watch from there. She has all kinds of tubes connected to her, along with a cast on her right leg and left arm. I sigh and Nick looks up, not at all surprised to see me.

"She's breathing much better, more evenly." He pats the seat next to him motioning for me to take a seat.

"Do they think she's gonna wake up soon?"

"They don't know," he sighs.

I run my hands through my hair and pull slightly. Why was I so selfish? Why did I have to believe Jessica was Tessa? If only I had slept, I probably would have realized. Maybe if I weren't so desperate for Tessa it wouldn't have happened. I don't know. I don't think I could've prevented it. I loved, I love her. I couldn't, I can't, live without seeing her smile, hearing her sarcastic voice, listening to the hum of her voice when she's nervous. I need all of that.

I quickly stand up, knocking my chair over in the process. I can't stand seeing her limp body in there.

I walk out of that room as fast as possible. I run to the parking lot and jump in my car. I start it furiously and speed all the way home. My grandmother is in the kitchen when I arrive. I stomp up the stairs, ignoring her concerned questions. I slam my door shut and scream out in frustration.

It's been three days since I left the hospital. Nick called, informing me she has yet to wake up, a few hours ago. I'm sitting on the edge of my bed with the door locked. The curtains are drawn and the lights off. Call of Duty is in the Xbox. The controller is laying on the floor, right beneath the spot where I punched the wall in frustration. The music is blasting loudly, so no one can hear my cries. My hair is a mess from constantly running my hands through it. I'm replaying my last conversation with Nick thinking, she'll never wake up and It's all my fucking fault.
