CHAPTER FOUR - A VAMPIRE SCORNED

(Part One)

Wiping away the remaining tears, I headed towards Valice in Wonderland for a much needed drink. Walking into the simmering tavern, I was greeted by the usual overworked vampires, who liked to indulge in a little blood beverage before and after their shifts.

Sitting at their black reptile-skin covered tables, the regulars regarded me with caution, as they settled back in their tall, chic skeleton constructed chairs, while those who knew of my volatile reputation avoided eye contact and shifted in their seats.

I sniggered at their apprehension as I walked to the bar and cleaned up my appearance using my compact powder case. ‘The usual fairy’s blood, Victoria?’ the voluptuous bar woman asked as I shook my head.

‘NO! I don’t want a hangover tomorrow, Ophelia. Just give me a Whispy Lycan to help me through until home time,’ I replied. She nodded and began to mix the cocktail. Ophelia idly chatted as I looked around the bar, taking in its made-over interior.

Previously musty, dark and damp, having taken it over from the Parvums, Ophelia had done a great job in making it a chic, intimate and sexy vampire haunt. Out were the dusty walls and wooden stools, and in came black walls, blood-stained floors and small circular tables covered with skins of various animals. To top off the sexy theme were large black candlesticks, seductively casting a low light from the red candles that burned inside them; it was the busiest place to get into after the vampire finished their shifts.

The men guzzled down pints of witches’ blood as they discussed the problems of their day, while young couples indulged in shots of fairies’ blood, not wary of the powers of this type of beverage.

I chuckled as they played drinking games with the shots, before thoughts of Ardan returned to my troubled mind; I envied the affection these couples displayed. Trying to distract myself from thinking of different ways to torture and kill Luan, I hadn’t noticed the drink which had been placed in front of me. ‘Hard day?’ Ophelia asked as she pointed down to the blood-infused cocktail glass. I nodded and took a sip.

The warm, strong Lycan’s’ blood kissed my lips and filled my throat with relaxation and promise.

Taking in the liquor, I gave a large sigh and ran my fingers through my hair. ‘When is it ever an easy day, Ophelia?’ I joked. She chuckled and started drying the glasses.

‘Have you had a chance to watch the games?’ she asked, trying to cheer me up. Unfortunately it had quite the opposite effect.

After she’d babbled about the sections I had missed, she began gushing about her new crush. ‘… and I definitely wouldn’t say no to that smouldering Ardan!’ she laughed as she pulled up her strapless dress, which was already struggling to contain her ample bosoms.

I often wondered if the reason for her popularity with the male customers was, in fact, her low-cut tops and figure-hugging skirts. I inspected her appearance as she went to serve an eager male customer.

Working here from the pub’s opening, this middle-aged vampire knew how to get the customers to buy more drinks. With an alluring smile, thick, luscious blonde hair and a killer glare, you could never tell that Ophelia had a ‘flaw’ in her appearance.
