I opened my eyes and was confronted by Caleb’s six pack. ‘Get up, we’re leaving soon, you need to follow!’ he whispered. I heard mumbled conversations.

‘Go!’ I replied. He fled, and I started to wonder how close I could get to Ardan without him sensing me.

I peeked round the corner of the rock and saw them leave together. ‘This way!’ Caleb guided; they all cautiously followed. I gave it a few minutes before I joined on behind, making sure I didn’t move too quickly so as to not be detected by the moonbeams or noticed by the guarded group.

The rocks I slid past cut my ice cold skin, but fortunately the wounds healed immediately before the blood could alert any other hungry contestants. Following the group down the other side of the mountain, I found myself growing increasingly fond of the rugged Lycan. ‘Hmmm, maybe I won’t kill him…’ I thought to myself as he joked with the others, trying to gain their trust.

Ardan held onto Luan’s arm and guided her along. ‘What if he really is dead? What would be the point in me fighting to get out of here?’ she asked him as thoughts of her husband’s dead body returned to haunt her mind.

‘He isn’t dead, Luan! They just did that to throw you off the game. Remember, you’re not just doing this for him - your son needs you too,’ Ardan reminded, at which they shared a tender hug.

Getting into the valley, they realised that there weren’t many hiding places, so they waited for their moment before each ran to the other mountain alone. ‘Wait over there,’ Phoenix whispered to Luan - the first to outrun the moonbeams.

She waited as the silence pierced the air, and then ran. She didn’t look back; I knew I had an opportunity. I found a few rocks on the ground and positioned myself in the shadows and, without a second thought, I waited until she was in the centre of the open space and threw one.

The stone bounced off the wall in front of her, alerting the light to her position.

The group looked back in my direction, trying to get a glimpse of the culprit. ‘RUN!’ Heather shouted to her. She used her supernatural speed to try and dodge the shooting moonbeams; she ran left and right, ducking and rolling to avoid the sparking floor, but it was too late.

As she got to the other side, she turned back to wave to the others. ‘I’m okay!’ she shouted, as she suddenly fell to the ground.

The group gasped. Caleb held Ardan back. ‘You can’t go yet! You’ll be killed!’ my partner in crime said as Ardan fought to get free.

‘Wait! I see something’ Heather whispered - Luan’s lifeless body had started moving. The blood shimmered in the moonlight as she slowly rose to her feet and put her arm in the air to reveal her injury.

The stump glistened as she waved her handless arm in the air and quickly hid before the light made its return to blow off another limb. ‘Thank goodness she’s not dead. Now it’s your turn…’ Heather said to Ardan.

Caleb held him back by his shoulder. ‘Let me go first,’ he said, taking a step forward. Thinking that Caleb was using this moment to accelerate our plan, a smile spread across my face and I watched intently.

Ardan moved his hand and looked him in the eye. ‘I will go to Luan, you can follow,’ he replied sternly, to which Caleb held his hands up, showing he meant no harm. If I had had a beating heart, it would have sunk at that moment, as I watched the opportunity disappear before my eyes.

Ardan flew past the beams; he charged into Luan’s arms and spun her round. She held up her arm to reveal her missing hand. ‘Concentrate…’ Ardan said. She closed her eyes and willed her arm to heal.

Nothing happened. Looking around, Ardan scraped his own limb on a jagged rock and infused his blood with her handless arm. The two connected and swam round her stump, aiding the healing process and uncovering a fully repaired hand. ‘We did it!’ she squealed. They shook hands to show the strength was back.

Celebrating the lucky escape for a few seconds, they used the remaining time to help guide the others beyond the beams of moonlight. Heather went next, forming a protective sphere around her, which protected her until she got to the middle of the open space. ‘Use the speed spell!’ Phoenix shouted to her, at which she quickly recited the spell.

The sphere began to dissolve under the intensity of the moon and she looked back, petrified, for help. Her feet started to twitch as the remaining layer of the sphere was blasted away and without warning she shot across the clearing to Ardan and Luan, crashing into them, sending them all hurtling to the ground. ‘I - I’m sorry…’ she stammered.
