Tables were replaced by jewelled rocks, white rabbits danced around and the vampires became confetti-throwing angels… it was an unsettling feeling, almost like when someone washes your t-shirt signed by your favourite movie star, and gives it back to you in crisp clean condition.
I did not like this new world and was trying very hard to come out of it. ‘Calm down Vic!’ Ophelia yelled as I fought to escape from her. Others came to help too, but it was no use, my strength was too much for them.
Running around the tavern trying to break out of this nightmare, another customer shouted, ‘Quick! Hold her down and let’s try this!’ Before I could fight them off, they all jumped on me and this stocky vampire poured a bloody concoction down my throat, evaporating my nightmare and bringing me back to the homely pub.
I shook my head as I sat up and tried to get my bearings. ‘What was that?’ I gasped as I looked at a stunned Ophelia.
The man picked me off the floor and ordered the other customers to continue with their day as he replied, ‘It’s a mixture of wood nymph’s and mermaid’s blood. It usually works to cure blood contamination in vampires.’
He turned to Ophelia and gave her a disappointed look before concluding, ‘Maybe you should have a batch of this if you’re going to continue experimenting on your customers. I thought experimentations were just for Dr Chronos to carry out?’ He did not wait for her reply as he walked out, leaving Ophelia embarrassed and offended at his insult.
Sitting back on the chair, I accepted a Lycan’s cocktail, on the house, and begged her to stop apologising. ‘It’s fine. Honestly, I’m okay - the panic’s over. Now tell me about this Ardan,’ I questioned, pretending I had been too busy to keep up with the games.
She propped herself up on a stool behind the bar and touched the floating screen as we both sat and watched. Aries gave us important updates. At least, he did, until she muted his voice and began to give me her own juicy updates: ‘Well when I last watched it, an hour ago, the two couples were about half an hour away from reaching the borders of the next zone. Just before I had to switch it off, they were resting; Heather and Phoenix were doing a ritual to entwine their powers. The two vampires got a little closer as they shared a fairy, who I’m guessing was killed by the Malum before it got to them. They make such a cute couple but I think I deserve him more than she does…’ she babbled. I tried to hide my fury at her classing Luan and Ardan as a couple.
Throughout Aries’ updates, there were short clips of each contestant, to ensure the viewers didn’t miss a thing. ‘It’s always good to have some romance in these games, don’t you think?’ she continued.
I merely gritted my teeth. ‘Yes, otherwise all the killing just gets boring, doesn’t it?’ I lied. She nodded and put the volume back on. Aries finished his announcement and the camera cut to the less popular contestants, giving them one minute of air time each and leaving the space free for the others - an extra four minutes’ coverage to tantalise our taste buds further.
Watching the fairy prisoner struggle with the rough terrain, I wondered how much further she would be able to go as the determined Lycan closely followed, tracking her scent. Distracted by Ophelia’s mindless wittering, we almost missed the famous four planning their next step.
