The wind whipped past my face as I sped up the back of the mountain at warp speed. Occasionally stopping and diving for cover to avoid being caught by the cameras and the moonbeams; I got to the side of the entrance to the cave and hid behind a boulder.
Waiting for the Lycan to reach the top, I contemplated his reaction to my plan.
The famous couples were already in the cave, enjoying the warmth of the roaring fire and discussing their next action.
Just hearing Ardan’s deep voice sent chills down my body, making me yearn for him even more. ‘The Orpheus Zone is just over that mountain. If we stay in pairs, we might be able to outwit the moonbeams. We just need to keep to the shadows and move slowly. I’ll go with Luan first and then we’ll meet you at the border. Just don’t use your powers unless absolutely necessary…’ The others started muttering their replies.
The thought of him spending even more time alone with Luan created a burning sensation in my stomach; a vision of the Lycan ripping her apart was the only thing that stopped me from running in there and doing it myself.
There was a scraping at the other side of the cave and I hid further behind the large rock.
The furry beast came clambering up the mountain, frothing at the mouth, ready to take action. He hid in the shadows as the moonbeams circled him, ready to pounce upon his prey.
He held his breath as the light shone inches away, before giving up and slowly moving onto to find another victim. The saliva glistened from his sharp, hungry mouth, as he slid round to the cave’s opening and peeked in.
‘Don’t move,’ I whispered anxiously, speaking partly to myself as I popped my head from around the rock, startling the bewildered Lycan. ‘Slowly come round here if you want to live…’ The beast thought about it for a moment but was forced to do as I asked as the moonbeams returned.
His hot, intimidating breath in my face made my body shake; he sniffed my flowing hair and trembling neck. ‘Vampire,’ it said as we crouched down, ready to form this forbidden alliance. ‘What would this influential vampire want with me?’ he asked, continuing to examine every inch of me and licking his jagged teeth with every glance.
I tried to back away but was restricted by the roaming moonlight and the cold rock pressing into my spine.
Trying to regain my composure and confidence, I challenged his stature by leaning forward and whispering into his large, hairy ear, ‘You want them dead and to be the only one to get across the river, and I want one of them… so how about we work together to get what we want?’ I edged backwards to see his reaction.
A smile appeared across his deadly jaw. ‘And why would I trust you?’ he asked; the deal seemed too good to be true.
I bravely touched his wet nose with my shaking finger and concluded, ‘Because you have nothing to lose and I really want this contestant.’
He chuckled at my obvious attempts to flirt with him. He slowly brushed my finger aside and whispered, ‘I know your reputation and your flirting doesn’t work on this beast. I am, however, intrigued as to why you would risk your life being here, so I’ll agree to your plan. Just be careful - this dog’s bark isn’t bigger than its bite…’ he mocked. I nervously laughed and we began planning how to get what we both wanted.
We moved from idea to idea; he doubted each one of my suggestions, inputting his own, which usually started and ended with sneaking up on them and tearing them apart: ‘And while you’re enjoying Luan’s flesh, what do you think the others will be doing if you just pounce?’ he asked. I shook my head at his latest addition to the conversation.
He too shook his head, ‘Well, what’s your great idea then?’ he replied as he morphed back into his human form, grabbing my jacket and using it as a kilt. His toned, tanned torso complemented his muscular arms and legs as he tied the fabric tight around his waist to maintain his modesty. With his shaven head and a fiery passion in his eyes, I could see a certain appeal in this rogue beast.
Composing myself, and my thoughts, I gave my final suggestion. ‘Okay, this one is going to work! Get to the river and board the boat with them, make sure you are on the boat with Luan and I will be on there with you. I will be disguised in a long robe but will distract Ardan. This will give you time to speak to Luan and apologise for trying to kill her. Make sure you gain a little bit of her trust as when we get to shore, you will need to take her aside and fake chest pains. When she goes to help you, I will have taken Ardan away and you can kill her. When she is dead, come back and we will kill the witch and wizard together by pretending Luan is missing and making them come to help us find them. Perfect!’ I replied, delighted with myself.
The strapping beast shrugged his shoulders. ‘Yes, but this is only going to work if they believe my apology - I don’t think that is going to happen…’ he doubted.
Ignoring his fears, I rustled around my bag and produced two pieces of Bidigol steaks and a vial of blood. ‘I will meet you at the lake, but take these in to them now and start the apology.’ I shoved the items into his hands and realised we hadn’t actually introduced ourselves. ‘So, what do I call my partner in crime then?’ I asked.
He turned back and smiled. ‘Caleb,’ he said before sliding round the rock and to the entrance of the cave. ‘I’ll be with you soon, Ardan’ I whispered to myself as I settled behind the rock and waited for them to leave.
