Promising to guide them to the river by the safest route possible, I led the group through the gloom, informing them of the challenges in the final zone and giving them hints and tips as to how previous contestants had managed to get through. ‘The final zone is going to be the most difficult. It’s a volcanic landscape, where devilish shape-shifting demons hunt their victims by controlling the fire to their advantage. They can take on your appearance, personality and mannerisms, but if you look close enough you can tell one of them by the little bursts of steam coming from their mouths…’ I explained to the inexperienced group.

As I explained how the demons of the next zone attacked their victims by suffocating them, cupping their expanding mouths over their victim’s face and breathing their raging fire into the body. That slowly burned them from the inside out, leaving only their ashes to fill the smouldering air.

Fighting for our lives, we were sinking into deep, wet mud one minute, before moving on to what seemed like a slippery, icy surface the next; this zone was clearly going to use every trick to shock, panic and scare us.

Suddenly, I could feel the temperature of the atmosphere rise unbearably. The smell of burning flesh merged with the damp, moist air of the Orpheus Zone; I knew we were getting close to the final zone. ‘Can you smell that?’ I asked. Caleb announced his thoughts on what had recently been cremated.

Heather screamed out in pain and began to tug at Luan, as she tried to help release her foot from the determined creature which had wrapped its thorny tentacle around her leg. The more we tugged, the tighter its grasp became. ‘Noooo! It’s cutting into my ankle!’ she cried. Her freshly pierced wounds exaggerated our hunger; the sweet aromas of the fresh crimson liquid haunted our slavering mouths and thoughts of tasting her flavoursome blood swam around our heads.

I could feel Caleb moving towards the wounded Heather as I too struggled to keep myself back. ‘CONTROL YOURSELF!’ Phoenix shouted. Caleb stepped back to beside Heather’s husband, his heart beating wildly with desire.

My mouth began to fill with saliva, knowing the treat in front of me was ripe and ready for tasting. ‘ARDAN! HELP!’ Luan shrieked; she also was struggling to maintain her hunger.

It was too late. With a swoop of wind, I could feel Ardan pounce into the air and land on the injured witch.

She screamed with every struggle, at which Phoenix decided he was going to risk it all by performing a protection spell. With a blast of sharp white light, Ardan was thrown back into the darkness; the spell, however, had alerted the zone’s creatures to our presence. They used this opportunity to descend on us, one by one.

Looking down as his wife’s injury, he quickly recited a healing spell and grabbed her arm. ‘WE NEED TO MOVE QUICKLY!’ he shrieked as a swamp demon made its appearance, shooting sticking mud in the direction of the group.
