There was a deafening silence as Luan froze, praying that Ardan would regain some strength to fight off the beast. Slamming Ardan’s levitated body against the tree, the wild animal circled his heart area with the stake and pulled it back, ready to make a powerful puncture.

Luan ran forward as the Lycan thrust his arm backwards.

However, her attempt to grab the stake was scuppered when a bolt of lightning blew the wooden weapon from the Lycan’s grasp, leaving it to cremate on the ground. He squealed in pain, looking for something to dowse his smoking paw.

Ardan crashed to the floor with a thump, and Luan ran over to inspect him for serious injuries. He lay there, struggling to breathe. His protector looked around before she ripped the arm of her shirt off and offered her flesh for him to suck on.

The screen went black and the whole office groaned, cheated out of the next juicy scene. ‘Is she asking him to do what I think she’s asking him to do?’ Darcy gasped as he looked at my seething face with excitement. ‘A vampire can’t suck another vampire, can it?’ he continued.

I stood up and started pacing.

He followed my path as he waited eagerly for my answer.

I turned and looked at him with a steely glare. ‘If she’s a new vampire, then she will still have some human blood remaining in her veins, so it won’t kill him. But if she has been a vampire for a year, then it could kill him; her blood will be dead,’ I replied, unsure whether I wanted to see the next instalment as the screen faded in from black revealing my worse nightmare.

Kneeling on the ground with his head in her lap, she held her wrists over his mouth. Ardan pressed his lips against her quivering creamy skin and sucked her crimson juice enthusiastically. The next few seconds were vital, and we all watched, holding our breath, to see if this would be the end of Ardan.

His body curled and twisted as Luan struggled to get him off her arm.

He bolted upright and grabbed her by the shoulders, when - ‘ARDAN!’ a familiar voice shouted from behind them. It was Heather, who had Phoenix by her side.

They ran towards the bloodsucking couple and grabbed Luan from his grasp. ‘Did you do that to the Lycan?’ Luan asked, watching Ardan shake the deadly thoughts from his mind as he came back round.

He stood up and wiped the sweet blood from his mouth, looking at Luan with a dazed expression etched across his chiselled face.

Heather nodded. ‘Yes, but we need to go now. He’ll be back and we’re so close to the next zone, we don’t have any time to waste…’ She grabbed Luan by the arm and headed deeper into the woods, leaving Phoenix to assist Ardan and make sure the blood didn’t release his more deadly side…

The screen suddenly cut back to Aries in the stadium, who was taking questions from the audience. We muted the addicted female vampire asking a question about the blooming relationship between Luan and Ardan. ‘I wonder if Ardan feels a little connection with Luan now he has tasted her human blood,’ Darcy mumbled, testing my reaction to his taunting.

Pretending not to be affected by the obvious signs on the screen, I replied, ‘I don’t know, but I need you to take this to Drake. Do not open it!’ I shoved the envelope into his face and hoped my quickly scribbled note would put the pressure on Drake to finish his task.

Disheartened at my lack of anger, he took the envelope and left the room, leaving me alone to plan my next move.
