The sirens screamed from above, and my pace quickened through the darkness. Without knowing where I was going, I bumped straight into a solid object.

The sirens stopped and a familiar voice rang out over the zone. ‘To all contestants - you’ll need to work extra hard to get to the River of Mortuus now. There is a new contestant who will stop at nothing - it seems - to get her own way! Let the real games begin!’ Aries announced.

My neck began to tighten with the invisible force tightening around it. ‘Who are you?’ the sexy voice whispered.

Choking through my answer, I replied, ‘Victoria - now please let me go. I can help you!’

The grip loosened and hands began to stroke my face. ‘You seem so familiar…’ Ardan said. I touched his hands, hoping to ease his concerns.

He moved away from me and I heard others arrive to support him. ‘Is it you from the cells?’ Ardan asked as he recognised my voice. My mind was working overtime; I tried to quickly devise a believable excuse for me taking part in the games - one for which I would be welcomed to the group.

I could feel the different bodies surrounding me and I knew I needed to answer to all of them. ‘Yes… I can help you all get out but you’ll have to listen to and trust me.’

They all chuckled at the ridiculous request. ‘Why should we trust you? You were one of them! Why are you in here, anyway?’ Ardan continued and, behind him, the group whispered nervously amongst themselves.

I reached out into the darkness and rubbed his arm, only to be pushed aside by Luan (her cheap perfume polluted the air as Heather’s natural fragrance made the musty, damp, sweltering atmosphere slightly more bearable).

I turned to Heather and took a deep breath of her fresh aroma before replying. ‘I tried to help you from behind the scenes but got caught and, when I didn’t conform to prison life, they put me in here. Anyway, I’ve worked on these games and know each zone better than anyone. Why not use my knowledge to help you? You have nothing to lose!’

Luan snorted and stated sarcastically, ‘Yeah, nothing except our lives! If you’ve worked on the games and know the landscape so well, that means you also know our weaknesses. Why should we trust you not to use this knowledge against us? After all, there isn’t enough space on the boat for all of us…’

Heather and Phoenix groaned in agreement, which caused Ardan to share in their distrust. ‘Well, the announcer did say that you would stop at nothing to get your own way,’ he chipped in.

With increasing desperation, and in a last attempt to win over the group I replied, ‘Luan, your husband is not dead! I want to help you all get out - especially you, so that you can be with him again.’

There was an air of thoughtful silence before Luan’s tears trickled down her cheeks and gave me the answer I needed. ‘He’s alive? Have you seen him?!’ she asked. The nervous energy of the group began to disperse.

I lied, ‘Yes, he’s in the cells. I can help you get to him, but we have to get out of here first.’ With that, I reached out into the darkness, connected with her hand and rubbed it to show my sincerity - false, of course.

She did not release me and instead pulled me in towards her emotionally shaken body. She accepted my story, with which the others slowly acknowledged me as a new member of their expanding group.

As they greeted me into their group, the questions about their own loved ones came thick and fast. I whispered my lies and felt their doubts fade away with every sentence.
