THE WEATHER WAS cool and the breeze was blowing Amanda Collier’s hair as she drove to the Airport.
As the breeze cooled her face, she began to feel content and began to relax a little. She hadn’t felt this relaxed for the last ten months. Only two weeks ago her best friend Samantha Brood, called her up and asked her to come and live in the beautiful and peaceful city of Los Angeles, California. Sam had told her that it is the land of opportunities, and that it would be good for her. Sam had sounded urgent and insistent.
Come to LA, Manda. See what it’s like. Give it a chance.
She had jumped to the invitation because she needed a change desperately. She also would get a chance to reunite with her best friend.
So here she was leaving the place where she grew up since her parents died when she was eight. She felt guilty leaving her Grandmother in Texas, but Gran had told her to go and don’t worry about her. Gran had said it would be a great experience for her and the scenery would do her good. She had also told her that it was time for her to leave the nest and do what she felt was right.
As she stopped at a red light, her mind went on her Grandmother. Gran was always there for her since her Parents’ accident and raised her well. When she was old enough; she has always taken care of her Grandmother, up until her minor stroke. Gran seems to be okay now and doesn’t need her anymore. Their neighbours had promised to check up on her and insist that she do not worry.
When the light change to green, Amanda took the intersection that lead to the Airport and considered if she should stop at a restaurant and get something to eat. She didn’t stop for breakfast this morning and now her stomach growled. She thought for a while and then decided against it. She would have lunch on the plane, although she has always hated Airplane food.
When she was almost at the Airport, she pulled into the driveway of a car dealership that was on the right side of the road. She had already called the owner and he had promised to buy her car.
A week ago her neighbour had told her about a car dealership who buy and sell cars. She had gotten the owner’s number and had called to make arrangement to sell her 1988 Volvo. The money from the sale would allow her to buy another car when she get to California.
She parked her car and headed to the garage at the far corner. The man in the small garage was short and stocky and dressed casually in a plain T-shirt and faded denim. The name tag on his shirt bore the name John Douglas.
He smiled at her when she walked up to him. “Hello, Ma’am” John greeted her. “How may I help you?"
"I called you last Thursday to sell my car. I am supposed to bring it in today” Amanda said.
“Oh yes. How much are you selling it for?” John asked. He wiped his hand in a rag and followed Amanda out to the front where she had parked her car.
“Any amount it's worth." She said.
“OK, let’s take a look at it” John examined the car and told her what it was worth.
After Amanda left the garage, she walked the mile to the Airport and headed to the waiting area for her flight. She still had fifteen minutes left before her departure, so she busied herself with a magazine. Still, her mind was not on the contents of the magazine as she could not concentrated, instead her mind went on her destination and what California had in store for her.
She sure hopes the change would allow her to unwind and forget her past forever.
