"You know what I figured we would do today?" Paul stated staring at me from across his kitchen table. I looked up from my homework with an eyebrow raised "What's that Lahote?" He leaned forward onto his elbows. "I figured we could get you back home and I could meet your mom." The smile from my face fell quickly. "Um how about we don't." I stood from the table heading to the kitchen to grab a water, Paul trailing behind me. "Jo eventually I'm going to have to meet her. Plus your dad keeps calling me asking when you are coming back. It's been a week." I took a big gulp of the water looking out the window. I did feel bad for my father, but I wasn't in any mood to see my mother. "Paul she's a horrible woman. Why would you want to meet her?" He wrapped his arms around my waist leaning his face into my neck. "Josephine Lucia Call, I love you and I want to be apart of your life forever. Which means everyone in your life is in mine as well. I also want to protect you, which means I have to know what I'm dealing with." I leaned back into him not a wanting to give in, but Paul has done so much for me. I owed this to him. "Alright, call my dad and let him know. I'll go grab my stuff." I freed myself from him and walked upstairs to his room. I took my time gathering my stuff, thinking of how this could go down. I just hoped she would hold her tongue and give Paul the benefit of the doubt as he was doing for her.
When we got to my house Embry was sitting on the front steps. He stood up straight his body tense. I got out with Paul walking to him. "Back in one piece as promised." Paul stated placing an arm on his shoulder. Embry nodded "yeah thanks." He looked to me "You sure you are ready to face her again?" I looked to Paul who squeezed my hand tighter. "Ready as I will ever be. It's time she met Paul." Embry nodded again and turned to go inside. Paul started after him pulling me along with him. When we entered my father and mother were sitting in the living room side by side on the couch, while my Aunt Lacey sat on the loveseat. The air was so tense and I felt like a stranger in my own home. "Hello Jo." My father said with sad eyes. I gave him a slight smile leaning into Paul's side for comfort. I looked to my mother as she was studying Paul from head to toe. She looked critical but at the same time I saw a hint of curiosity. "Mother" she shot her head to me "this is Paul, my imprinter. Paul this is my mother, Kate Call." I wanted to add that she wasn't really a Call anymore but decided against it. She stood up taking a few steps toward us and extending a hand to Paul. "Hello Paul. I don't know if you remember but I was a friend of your mother's" I rolled my eyes, yeah bring up his dead mother great job Kate. He shook her hand smiling "Nice to meet you Mrs. Call." Silence soon filled the air causing a awkwardness in the room. "Well" my Aunt Lacey said jumping up. "We should all get going. We made reservations for that new Italian place in Port Angeles." I looked to Embry who gave me a sheepish shrug.
Dinner went by without much talk. My father asked Paul about his father and such, as well as basketball stuff. When we were all done and waiting for the checks, my mother got up the nerve to ask of Paul's intentions with me. I looked to her appalled and mad. "His intentions with me?" I asked. Paul nudged me to be quiet. I sat back in my chair put off. "Well as you have heard and know about firsthand, I imprinted. Josephine is my whole world. I'm bound to her and I'm never going anywhere, no matter what." She looked at him suspiciously. "How do you know you imprinted on her?" I looked to Paul who burrowed his eyebrows and pursed his lips. "I could feel her presence before I saw her. I was sitting there taking a break from basketball, and suddenly my world stopped. When I looked up I saw Jo." He looked to me and I looked lovingly into his eyes "She was the most absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous woman I had ever seen in my life. I remember feeling as if I needed to be by her, keep her safe. It felt like she was the only thing that mattered on this earth. I couldn't look away. It was practically......" my father cut him off "indescribable." My mother looked at my father then back to Paul. She studied his expression as Paul never looked away from me. I could hear her sigh loudly. Embry and my Aunt Lacey watched intently, waiting for the next move. "I know Jo has probably told you all about our situation. However, she doesn't know the whole story. When we left La Push her father gave up his life as a wolf. He decided to not shift anymore. What we didn't know was when he broke that tie with that part of himself finally, he also broke the tie with me." I looked quizzically to my father who looked guilty. "We had many problems and I felt trapped. I once get so passionate about this man and on day it was gone. It scared me. So I left. I was wrong in doing so but I didn't know what else to do. I thought of taking Josephine with me but it would have been even more selfish. I ......... I made a huge mistake." I could feel tears begin to prick my eyes, looking away to hide it. "I was surprised to see Ben when he found me a few weeks ago. What I didn't know was when he reconnected here and decided to try to shift again, he reignited that bond." I looked to my father who looked lovingly at my mother. "Why didn't you tell me you shifted again?" I asked my father. He sighed heavily "Sweetheart I wanted to, but I was afraid it would make things worse for you. You had already gone through so much. I also wanted to see if maybe just maybe it would bring your mother back." I looked to the floor, unsure of how to handle this. Should I try to forgive my mother? I looked to Paul who had sympathy in his eyes. I knew he could feel my dilemma. I thought of how close we were and of how I couldn't imagine being away from Paul. If this was how my father felt about my mother then I knew what I needed to do. I looked to my mother "okay, I guess this means I need to come home."
