Dad pulls his truck into a long gravel driveway leading downhill to a decent sized wood cabin in the forest. It was about half a mile away from the main road and surrounded by trees. "Well we are home." My father sort of mumbles before getting out. I could see a woman exit the house with a young man. I could only assume it was my Aunt Lacey and my cousin Embry. I hadn't seen them for years, about 8 to be exact. It took me days to find Embry on social media to contact him about my father after my mother left. Aunt Lacey ran down her front steps engulfing my dad in a big hug and Embry shook my dad's hand. They all three looked to me and I realized I was still sitting in the truck. I unbuckled myself and hopped out, grabbing my small carrying bags and walking to the steps. "Oh Ben she's even more beautiful than I remember." Lacey said hugging me. I politely hugged back and gave Embry a little wave. "Well you two let's get you inside. We can grab your over things once we have had dinner." Aunt Lacey states walking back inside with us at here heels. It wasn't like we had many bags anyways, dad sold almost all of our furniture and what not. Mostly just our personal belongings remained.
"Dinner is already on the table, should still be warm. Embry was kind enough to make dinner while I was at work." I looked quizzically at my cousin. "You cook?" He beamed "Heck yeah I do, even better than mom." She playfully hit him in the head. "Don't gloat young man." We all chuckled and sat down to eat. After dinner Embry helped me carry all my bags and boxes to my new room. It was small but the closet was bigger which I didn't mind at all. There was a small desk and mirror in the corner and a waist high bookshelf adjacent to it. The bed was full size and a brass frame. "My mom was sure she remembered you favorite color being red." Embry said placing my bags on the red bed set. I chuckled "she has a great memory." I grabbed my bag of pictures placing each one on top of the bookshelf. I even saved one of my mother and I. "Well I'll leave you to it. There are drawers in the closet and plenty of hangers. We both have school in the morning so you can ride with me if you want to?" He said looking to his feet. I don't know what possessed me to do it but I walked up to him and embraced him in a tight hug. "Thank you Embry, for everything." He hugged me back "No problem, you will be like the little sister I never wanted." Be both laughed and he left the room. "Well Jo hopefully you don't screw thus up."
The next day I woke extra early to shower and get ready for school. Since it was still summer I pulled on a pair of cut off shorts and a blush tank top/onesie, then paired it with a simple black bracelet and black sandals. I curled my hair and did my make up as usual. Just as I was leaving the shared upstairs bathroom Embry was stumbling sleepily from his room. "Geez already up?" He asked while yawning. I laughed "Gotta make a good impression Em. Never know I might meet the man of dreams." He rolled his eyes and mumbled something under his breath. I laughed and headed downstairs to grab some breakfast. My father sat at the kitchen table drinking some coffee and reading the newspaper. He already looked so at home and it made me happy to see him somewhat normal again. " Goodmorning daddy." I said kissing him in the cheek." He looked over his newspaper at me. "Well good morning to you too. Up early I see." I rolled my eyes "Embry thought the same thing." He chuckled and went back to his paper. I grabbed a couple packets of pop tarts and threw them in the toaster for Embry and I. About 30 minutes later Embry trudged down the steps and I handed him the pop tarts folded in a paper towel. "Hey thanks." He said biting into one. "So I was thinking if we head out now I will have time to show you around the school." He' stated through a mouth full of pop tart. "That would be great Embry. Jo you really should, maybe he will get to introduce you to his friends as well." My Aunt Lacey said entering the kitchen and pouring herself a cup of coffee. I shrugged "oh why the hell not I guess." "Watch that mouth missy" my father hollered from the dining room. I ran to hug him goodbye and grabbed my bag waving bye to my Aunt as Embry and I headed out to his truck. "May have to go car shopping for you soon huh?" Embry said starting it up and starting up the drive. "Well now that I can't take the bus around you may just be right."
