"...because...because I love you."

Your heart sank. This was a moment you'd literally waited your entire life for and it was just... wrong. When those words left his perfect lips you couldn't help but feel bad about it.

"I love you too...but-" His tattooed fingers hushed you.

"Just - just think about it. I don't want an answer right now but I do want you to consider me. You had at some point right?" His hand dropped into his lap.

"Well, yes but-"

"I know I hurt you. And I don't deserve it but just..." He slouched forward a little defeated.

"O-ok." You frowned a little.

He shot to his feet awkwardly, "I'll let you get to work then. See you on your break."

"See ya then." You watched him leave feeling a little guilty.

Me: Where you at?

Kid: Courtyard

You gathered your things and headed for Kid.

He was leaning against the tree you'd slugged him under after you first met in the fall. Now a cool spring afternoon breeze ruffled the crimson hair that jutted out from under his navy bandanna.

"Yo!" You called getting his attention.

He nodded keeping his gaze fixed ahead and stepping out of the shade.

"How's the re-rebuild going?" You made an awkward attempt at small talk after maybe ten minutes of dead silence.

Kid seemed to be brooding - which was actually normal however, this time you felt like you were somehow responsible.

"Ok." He grunted.

You sighed trying to think of something better to say. Normally you could be comfortably quiet with each other. But now you felt anxious and when you were anxious you were chatty, Kid's reluctance to speak only made you more antsy. It was a vicious cycle.

"Maybe I could come watch you work some time." You suggested.

"Maybe." He echoed.

"I always found it interesting that you'd rebuilt the whole thing. I guess because I can't do stuff like that."

Please just stop talking me!

Kid couldn't figure out why you were so eager to carry on a pointless conversation. And why were just inviting yourself places? He'd heard you say it; you pretty much had a boyfriend now. It was time for him to distance himself.

Except he couldn't.

It was taking everything in him to not turn and gaze into your big dumb doe eyes. For the first time ever his emotions were all tangled up and he didn't know how to fix it.

"Helloooo? Earth to Kid." You prodded his side.

"What." He grimaced.

"Nothing I guess." You frowned.

You'd been carrying on for quite a while and the asshole wasn't even listening.

"Are you OK?"

"Yes."

No.

"B-because it seems like you're mad at me?" You winced bracing for his response.

"No."

Am I mad at her?

He certainly wasn't trying to make you feel that way, but well he didn't know how to feel himself.
