LENA'S POV
"Morning, love. I had an early meeting and didn't want to wake you. Hope you have a great day."
That's the text I got from Stef when I got up. That certainly put me in a good mood and I couldn't believe how hard and fast I was falling for her. Because I still am - everyday, a little more.
I decided to call her instead of replying.
"Hey, love," she answered.
"Hey, is your meeting over?"
"Yeah, what's up?
"Well, I wanted to stop by for a second. If you have time," I added.
She hesitated. "I have a little time, but-"
"Great. I'm going to get ready and see you in a few." I hung up the phone, leaving her to wonder what that was all about.
After taking a shower and getting ready, I got us both coffee from Stef's favorite café and headed to her newspaper. After getting there, she let me in.
"Ohhhh, give me that," she demanded, reaching for her cup.
"Gee, good morning to you too," I teased.
She feigned surprise. "What- I said good morning, I sent a cute ass text at 5AM."
I laughed and kissed her cheek. "How was your meeting?"
She shrugged. "It was fine, boring af, nothing out of the ordinary." She took a long sip of her coffee. "Thank you for this, by the way. You know how to treat a girl." She winked at me and I melted.
"Well, I should get going," I announced.
Stef looked confused. "What- you just got here!"I smiled. "I have a class right now. I just wanted to drop this off and see you for a bit."
She kissed my cheek. "Alright, I'll see you at home."And on that note, I left her newspaper and headed to work.
It was a long day at work - students being annoying, not paying attention to the lesson, boring meetings throughout the day... but it was fine because Stef and I had a date tonight. Not the dressing up kind of date, but a movie night cuddling on our couch and being affectionate with each other.
I was looking forward to that, specially when Stef told me she'd already rented a couple of movies and would make sure to get home early - or at least not too late.
But then, it was 8PM and she hadn't shown. I was dressed in my comfortable PJs and waiting for her patiently, when I got a text:
"I'm so sorry, there was a last minute thing. I'll be late."
I sighed. "Ok" was all I answered.
I tried to understand Stef's crazy schedules and hours, but sometimes it went beyond my comprehension. She couldn't make any plans with me and stick to them anymore, and that was becoming annoying. I knew she was doing her best to get promoted and we're young, right? so we should work hard while we can. But I missed her and I missed it when we were getting to know each other, first month of our relationship, when I felt like a priority.
Thirty minutes later, she arrived home with japanese food in her hands and an apologetic smile.
"I thought I'd bring you flowers, but you can't go wrong with sushi, right?" She approached me.
I was not having it. "It's fine, Stef," I said, passive agressively.
Stef unbottoned her plaid shirt, revealing her black top and grabbed my hands.
She sat us both down on our bed."I am so so sorry. This- we're only five months into our relationship and I already feel like I'm letting you down."
I sighed. "I just- you have priorities, and I shouldn't be upset about that. Your work is priority-"
"Love, that's-" she interrupted me.
"Please let me finish. You work is priority, as mine is to me. I don't think that's a bad thing, I just think that you can still show. You can have both."
She hugged me. "I'm done apologizing. From now on, I'll show you some change, instead of promising it."
I smiled sadly. I did forgive her, but it still hurt. I'd been looking forward to this all day, just being with her. And now that she was here - I didn't want it. I just wanted to get some sleep.
"I'm gonna get ready for bed," I stood up.
Stef looked at me, knowing I wasn't ok with the way things were."I'll get you a plate first," she insisted, referring to the sushi.
I shook my head. "I'm tired. Just- I'll have it some other time."
I walked into the bathroom and got ready for bed. When I came back, she was still there, with a puzzled look on her face.
"I guess flowers would be better," she said.
I sighed. "Showing up is better," I whispered.
When I was falling asleep, I felt Stef's arms going around me and her nose smelling my hair. I felt sorry for this evening, for how it didn't go as planned. I felt sorry for how fast things seemed to be falling apart, and I felt sorry for letting myself fall for her this badly.
Everytime she didn't show up, everytime our timing sucked and everytime we missed each other - hurt like hell. And I don't know how to fix it.So I let her touch me and smell me for it was still comforting. It was, after all, what I'd been looking forward to all day - but not like this.
AN: so sorry for the lack of uptades :( I hope you still read it, like it and let me know what you think. Comments and votes are always welcome :) I will try to update more often 🌻
