Chapter Fourteen
Another month of a half passed, Eliza and I were separated. We found our ways in life; she, started working as a babysitter at Ashton’s old neighbors. And I, started working as a maid at people who were elite. The work wasn’t much because I wasn’t the only maid there; every couple of days, I would call Eliza and ask her—she seemed okay and she stated that the babysitting was as hard as she imagined. I still heard voices and saw figures which weren’t real. I tried to make myself busy by working and every night, I read the note which Jake gave me before I left for the job. “I’ll always love you, I’ll always care. Take care of yourself and I’m watching you, you’re still under my protection, love.”
I loved him so much and his note made me smile in my depressed days. I heard that my family started to search for me in every state, and currently they’re searching in New York. I knew I had to run away after a while, I just needed to have money.
“Thank you for the tea, Christina.” Mrs. Hamilton told me as I served the tea. Mrs. Hamilton is a kind lady, she’s super busy sometimes though. Mr. Hamilton, her husband is the mean one, he treated everyone like trash. Their children weren’t young; Nathaniel Hamilton is 19, he studied business at the New York University—so he visited his parents rarely. Rebecca Hamilton is 22, married; at last, Charles Hamilton is 17 and goes to high school. That family was respectful and they paid decent money for everyone.
As I was cleaning the dining table, I overheard Mrs. Hamilton speaking to someone on the phone saying “He’s more than welcomed here, sweetie. I’ll wait for him tonight then!” after that she called all the maids and servants for her service.
“My nephew is visiting us tonight, I want everything to be perfect. Perfect dinner, perfect service, perfect—everything. Now go.” She said then went upstairs.
Julia, who was another maid said “Well, we have many things to do. Who wants to help me clean the bedrooms?”
“I will.” I offered.
She smiled and we both took our ways upstairs. All their bedrooms were incredibly clean and perfect; Julia and I started to prepare the room for the guest. Julia was in her twenties, she was fun and caring, but I never asked much about herself..I was more of a loner here. I missed my best friend so much, and I still wondered if anyone’s looking for me, I slept and woke up in fear every day however, I knew I was under the protection of Jake. Time passed and I cleaned the bedrooms with Julia, also helped in the kitchen. I liked listening to the chit-chats of housekeeper with the maids. The housekeeper; Miss Remora, was a really kind lady, she treats everyone kindly and respectfully. She considers the servants just like her children or siblings, she listens and gives advice—she tried to make me talk about my life but I used to change the subject every-time, ‘cause it was plainly shameful to talk about my life.
After a while, Charles Hamilton arrived, waiting for his cousin to arrive too. Mrs. Hamilton was busy getting dressed and ready for the guest; I got used to expecting many guests at the Hamiltons’—such a powerful and elite family. The doorbell rang, it was the guest for sure. I couldn’t see him as I was in the servants’ room. I could hear greetings from the family to the nephew—and after multiple minutes, I was called to serve drinks. I prepared everything and put the drinks on the tray. I started moving towards the family who were sitting and talking—before serving, I took a glimpse at the guest and I started to recognize him as he made eye-contact with me and looked surprised and horrified—it was Derrick. The tray accidentally dropped from my hands from tension, Derrick stood up and the first words he said to me after months from being apart were “Christina? How in the world…?” The Hamiltons looked at us not understanding what was happening and before anyone started to talk, I ran to my room quickly. Derrick! Derrick was Mrs. Hamilton’s nephew—I was so doomed. I tensely and quickly packed everything I had in my bag. I feared that day to come—my escape has perceived. I stormed out of the room and they saw me and confusingly asked “where are you going?” I did not respond and quickly got out of the house. I walked a bit away from the house, then I heard my name being called “Christina!” it was Derrick. I stopped breathing, looked at him blankly then started to run for my life, I heard him running after me. I didn’t feel anything, all I was focusing on was running from Derrick who would obviously take me back to California and to the hospital. After almost fifteen minutes of running from Derrick, I tripped and fell in front of a car on the road. I stared as the car was approaching to me and I was ready to get hit—but in the last minute, I felt Derrick taking my hand away from the road. We both stared at each other blankly while breathing so hardly; I was an idiot, I was defeated again. He looked at me with a disappointed look and with a broken but soft voice said “Just don’t do this to me ever again.” And he instantly took me in his arms—hugging him felt so…warm and protective. It’s been a really long time since I was last hugged like that. I missed Derrick but I knew he would take my back, so I feared him.
“Let’s get you out of here.” He told me while holding my hand.
I broke down in tears telling him “I don’t want to go back.”
He started tenderly to wipe my tears from my cheeks and said “No, you won’t go back now. We’ll stay here in Virginia for a while, so I can know what happened to you and then we discuss going back.”
I felt so relieved by his words and at that time, I didn’t fear him ‘cause he wasn’t forcing me to go back. He explained that his parents had an apartment in Virginia and offered to go stay there with him for some days to tell him about everything.
“All that happened and I wasn’t—there?” he asked, astonished; after I told everything from my escape till when I am now.
“Yeah.”
“Tina, I—don’t know what to say,” he paused while his hands touched his face discouragement. “I should have been there for you.” He continued.
I sighed, looking away from him. “I don’t want anything from anyone.” I bitterly told him.
He held my hand and said “Christina, please! I swear I haven’t been okay since the day you got into the hospital. I felt aches in my chest and I’ve been missing you so much,” he paused. “it’s crazy that I’m attracted to a girl like that.”
“A schizophrenic girl.” I corrected him.
“Hush,” he put his finger on my lips. “You’re here now, and that is what’s importantly.” He kissed my forehead.
“Yeah, I’m there. You can take my back, you win.” I bitterly told him, again.
“Stop being stubborn. We’ll spend some days here first.”
I rolled my eyes.
He smirked at me with his glittering eyes then humorously asked me “Aren’t you hungry?”
“No.” I blankly said.
“What!? I’m starving! Come on, I’ll take you out for dinner.” I looked at him weirdly with an eyebrow raised and he quickly continued “yes, it is a date.”
“No!!” I objected.
“No, you cannot refuse, or I’ll take you back to California.” He sarcastically blackmailed me.
I smiled and said “please go out on a date with me?”
He laughed so did I. And honestly? That was the best feeling ever—laughing after a hard day with someone special.
