MONIFAH

Walking down the busy streets of New York City, you see people on the street rushing around looking for love, and for action.

There's an energy to New York City that is unlike any other cities in the world.

I felt a sea of anxiety deep down as I proceeded into the office building.

"Monifah, right?" Some lady with a British accent appeared in front of me.

"Yes."

"I hope you know this is a very difficult job for which you are totally wrong and if you mess up, my head is on the chopping block." She said, walking me to an empty desk. "This is where you'll be working.

I shook my head in agreement as I took a seat in the black office chair.

"Okay, first of all, I'm Jen," Jen said. "What we do here is answer the phones and the phone must be answered every single time it rings."

I just stared at her, trying to pick up all the words that spilled out of her mouth.

"Calls roll to voicemail, and she gets very upset." Jen sat at her desk. "And if I'm not here...you stay at that desk."

"Well, what if I need to use the restroom?" I asked.

"One time an assistant left the desk because she cut her hand and she missed a very important meeting," Jen stated. "Now, she's fired and hasn't been working ever since."

"Stay at my desk at all times, got it," I scooted my seat closer to the desk.

The phone ring, causing me to look at it.

"Shirley Davis's office." Jen picked up the phone, looking over at me. "No, she's not available right now."

"Who is..."

"Yes, I will tell her you called." Jen placed the phone back down. "Yet again."

I opened to a blank page in my notebook, while placing a black ink pen beside it.

"Remember, you and I have totally different jobs. Which means you get her coffee and you run errands." Jen explained. "I am in charge of making her schedule, her appointments and her expenses and most importantly I get to go with her to Paris in the fall."

A fake smiled spread across my face.

"Now, stay here," Jen cooed. "I have to go to handle some important business."

The phone started ringing again as she walked away.

I grabbed the phone, placing it to my ear. "Hello, Mrs.Davis's office."

"I was wondering if I could speak with her today?" I could hear a man say from the other side of the phone.

"You know, she's in a meeting. Could I please take a message?" I answered, grabbing a yellow sticky note and placing it in my notebook.

"Just let her know that Robert called, thank you," A beeping noise echoed throughout the phone.

I sighed before hanging up the phone.

A man wearing a black tuxedo approached my desk. "I guessed an eight." He handed me a pair of heels.

"Um, wow that's very nice of you." I grabbed the shoes. "But I don't think I need these. Mrs. Davis hired me and I think she knows what I look like."

"Do you?" He asked.

I pointed the heels back towards him. "Take these and have a nice day."

"Monica?" Mrs.Davis called out someone's name, causing me to look around.

"She means you," The same guy wearing the tuxedo, stated.

I got up from my chair and made my way into her office.

"There you are, Monica. How many times do I have to call your name?"

"My name is Monifah," I blankly stated.

She smiled at me. "I need you to go pick up the papers from the Art Department, tell Paula that I can pick up Mason if she's not available and make sure the stack of papers that was placed on your desk is edited and ready to be sent out tomorrow. Do you understand?"

"Uh, okay," I turned back around.

"And, Monifah..." Mrs.Davis walked over towards me.

"Yes?" I looked over towards her.

She stared me up and down. "That's all."

I just walked out of her office, not even saying another word.

"This is just temporary," I mumbled to myself.
