I walked home from school. I hadn't made any friends, but the people are nice. I go to Skaia Elementary School. Jake went to the same school when he was my age. I have Mr.Vantas as my teacher. He's always urging us to follow our dreams, don't put ourselves down, and warning us not to annoy people. I don't know why he cares, none of us listen to his lectures.

I get home and Momma is just getting into the house. I keep the door open as I walk behind her. "Hi Momma!" I say. She jumps.

"H-hi Jade. You surprised me there." She says shakily. I giggle, walking inside, and closing the door.

"What'd you do today, Momma?"

"Oh, you know. The usual cleaning and washing, watched a little tv. "

"Where'd you go?"

"What do you mean?"

"You just got here a minute before I did. Where'd you go in your car?"

"Just went to the store."

"What'd you get?"

"Oh, I couldn't find what I needed."

"What'd you need?"

"Jade I've had a long day, can you get out your homework and I'll be back in a few minutes to help?"

"Yes, Momma."

She seems weird today. It's not often that the store doesn't have what she needs. She usually brings back snacks for me. I guess she didn't want to this time.

I heard the door jiggle and I ran over to be greeted. I opened the door, I got all excited, waiting to be loved. But it was Jane, Jake's best friend.

"Why are you here?" I said, annoyed.

"I'm here to speak with your mother. May I come in?" She said with a small smile.

"Fine." I move past. She runs upstairs. I hear a squeal of joy. I close the front door, walking upstairs. I lay on the floor, my ear at the bottom of Momma's door.

"It was wonderful. I got to see my baby boy. His hair has grown longer. He's made friends. It was hard letting go of him to get in the car." I heard Momma say.

Jane piped in, "I know, right! It's hard to leave when I love him so much. I mean, being his girlfriend and all." Girlfriend. That jerk is dating my brother. I know she probably convinced him to hurt my father. She's the whole reason that father is wounded and Jake is gone.

"*gasp* Janey!!! That's great news! Why didn't you tell me before!?!" Momma says excitedly.

I stopped listening and burst through the door.

"YOU VISITED JAKE WITHOUT DAD'S PERMISSION!?!?!" I shouted at Momma. Her face went red and she tried to hide, but I could see her guilt. And as soon as father got home, I'd tell him.
