(kinda answering where the real Shiro is, and a warning not to touch our baby paladins) Lance is kidnapped, either by the Galra or someone else, and in their prison he finds Shiro. Obviously Lance is confused because Shiro is in the castle, but real Shiro explains his story from way back when he disappeared. They escape together and confront not-Shiro, only to find that he genuinely believes that he is Shiro too. This is an open end outlet for an author to explain this how they like.
