Coran gets possessed by some sort of malevolent force, like a ghost. This could also work with any one of the paladins, but Coran is my favorite and there's almost no good fanfiction for Coran. The ghost/possessive force would want revenge on Voltron for an old wrong against it- it wouldn't understand that the new paladins are not the ones who hurt it. The paladins gain the upper hand and banish the ghost. :D
