Infinity clung to me, trembling and terrified as I tried to change to go to bed. She'd had a bad dream but absolutely refused to talk about it, or even to talk for that matter. "Princess, would you tell me what's wrong?", I pried her away from my body and held her by the shoulders. "Can't....bad bad bad....I...", she stumbled over her words, her voice hoarse and weak. I picked her up in my arms and took her over to the rocking chair in the corner of our room.
I sat down with her straddling me and held her tightly as I stroked her hair. "Infinity, Baby it was just a dream. It's over shhh shhh", the chair rocked gently beneath us as I tried to soothe her. She burst into tears and buried her face in my neck, sobbing quietly. I could only hold her as she fell apart and hope that I'd be able to pick up the pieces. "Im sorry...", she sniffled holding me tightly. "Princess there's no need to apologize", I kissed her temple and continued to rub her back. "Y..yes there is.... I'm so weak...even a dream sends me to the brink of....insanity", she mumbled against my shoulder causing a low growl to rumble in my throat.
I pulled her chin up gently and kissed her passionately. "Princess don't say things like that", I whispered as we pulled apart, my hands cradling her face. "Why not, they're true", she whispered dejectedly. "Stop it Princess, they're not true. You're in pain and you've never properly coped with it. I'm here for you, if you need to cry I'll be your shoulder, if you need to feel safe I'll be your protector, but I can only be there if you let me.", I tried desperately to make her understand. She nodded and laid her head against my chest, letting the steady beat of my heart lull her to sleep. I carefully stood up and laid her gently on the bed.
I kissed her forehead before going to check on the twins. Jasper broke into a coughing fit as soon as I opened the door, causing me to carefully pick him up. "Shhhh shhhh, it's okay", I rocked him against my shoulder. "It's okay daddy's here", I held him closer to me with hope that he would fall asleep. He finally calmed down and laid his head against my chest. He cooed softly as his breathing evened out and I walked around the house. Every time I tried to put him down he would start crying, which would induce another coughing fit. Finally I just took him and Hazel back to my bedroom, put Hazel in her bassinet, and laid down with Jasper curled up on my chest. Infinity snuggled up against my side and I felt a sense of comfort come over me, knowing that they were all safe and would never have to endure any hardships if I could help it.
