Chapter 5

Losing a wing was nothing to the pain I was in after falling from the sky. It hurt to move anything and I had the worst migraine ever. I wasn't sure what had happened but I knew it wasn't good.

I opened my eyes and saw I was back in the same room. No, a different room. With no window.

I took a deep breath and healed the pain in my back. I got out of the bed and was about to walk away from it when something tugged on my arm. I looked back and my wrist was handcuffed to the rail of the bed...

The door opened and Lucy's dad walked in twirling a set of keys around his index finger.

"What is it going to take to get you to trust me?"

"You obviously don't trust me." I said, yanking on my arm.

"Trust must be earned, Julia."

"Ditto."

He sighed and walked closer to me. I took a step back, ending up bumping into the bed. "I never wanted to hurt you."

"But you did. You almost killed me with that... what the hell was that?"

"An electric fence. You flew right into it. But we fixed the problem. That won't happen again."

"So you'll let me just walk out of here then?"

He smiled. "You're staying right here, Julia. I'm going to raise you better than your mother did."

If only he knew Lucy didn't raise me at all.

"You can find someone else. Someone younger than me. I'm set in my ways already but someone younger would be easier to convince."

"You're not getting out of this."

"Please. Just let me go."

"Julia, you know I can't do that."

"Can you at least let me have my arm back?"

"How do I know you won't try to get away?"

"You're standing right there. I wouldn't be able to get past you."

He narrowed his eyes at me before he walked over to me and pulled out a set of keys from his pocket. He found a small one that looked odd compared to the others. He unlocked the handcuffs.

Then I ran for it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't know the building like he did. I had no idea where I was running to or who I'd run into. I didn't know how to get to the main door but I did know that if I could find a window, I would be okay.

I pushed the door open and glanced in either direction. The hallway looked like one of a hospital. The hallway was white with bright lights. There were doors on either side in different spots. I didn't know where the exit was.

I went left and started running down the hallway. The doors all looked the same and there wasn't much difference in any of them.

I got all the way to the end of the hall before I realized I didn't know where I was going or where I could go. Lucy's dad was gaining on me fast and I wasn't sure I had any time to get away.

I had to fight him.

He held his hands up in front of him. "Julia, I'm not trying to harm you."

"You're a liar."

"Don't act like this, Julia. You're better than this."

"You're right. I am better than this."

He straightened up as if I was going to cooperate and listen to him.

I shoved him to the floor as I took off running. I slid on the tile as I saw a door for the stairs. I ran to it and tried shoving it open but it was locked. And I'd lost the keys on my way past Lucy's dad.

Crap.

I glanced left and right and sighed as I saw an elevator with its doors opened. I ran into it and pressed the button that said L, knowing it went to the lobby. The hospital didn't teach me much but it did teach me how to read elevator signs.

The doors shut just before he could get to me. But he pulled out a walkie-talkie of some sort and said something into it. I knew he was telling someone where I was. And how to capture me.

I panicked.

I pressed all the buttons, hoping the elevator would pick another floor before it could get to the Lobby. And it did.

The next floor down.

The doors opened and I was by myself. No one was around. I couldn't hear people yelling or people running or any sort of chaos.

I headed down the hall to the right and almost ran into someone coming out of a room.

It wasn't someone but two people. And I knew one of them.

"Aryan." I breathed, my mind going blank. Aryan was there! No, that was a terrible thing. A very, very terrible thing.

He looked at me with his eyes drawn together and lines on his forehead. He was squinting and I knew it was because he had neither his glasses nor his contacts. He was practically blind. He was wearing a black shirt and gray sweatpants. He had no shoes or socks on.

"Aryan, it's me. We're going home." I said, tears welling up in my eyes.

The man beside Aryan pulled a walkie-talkie from his pocket and spoke into it. "I've found her. Just got off the elevator on the third floor."

My eyes widened. "No. No, I..." My mind was completely blank. I couldn't think or speak or function. I couldn't do anything knowing Aryan didn't know me.

What did they do to him?

Seconds later, a pair of hands grabbed me under my arms and shoved me against the wall. One person was yelling at me while another was sticking a needle in my arm.

But none of that mattered. Aryan didn't know me, didn't know where he was. He didn't even know why I wanted to take him home.

What else didn't he know?

I swayed on my feet and my head filled with fog. My eyes were heavy and my vision was fading. Just before I lost consciousness, my vision went dark.

Icould no longer see Aryan.
