Chapter 29

Lucy hugged me tightly before hugging Aryan. "Don't do anything I'd regret."

I smiled nervously. I wanted to act like I knew what would be occurring. But I was going into things blindly, just as I'd left them.

Kellan pulled me into a hug, wrapping both his arms around me. It was so hard to think that just weeks previous, I'd been afraid of him. I had been running from him with the pretense that he was out to get me. But there was someone much worse out there.

"You know how to reach us if you need anything."

I nodded.

He kissed the top of my head. "Stay safe out there."

"I always do." I said with a smile.

Holden pulled me in for a hug. "Remind me to show you my house when this is all said and done. It would blow your mind."

"I don't think that's necessary." Lucy said, standing beside me.

Holden shrugged and ruffled the hair on top of my head. "Someday."

Lucy hugged me one more time. "I love you, Julia."

"I love you too."

Aryan slid his hand in to mine. "Time to go."

We finished our goodbyes then walked out into the hallway. I wanted to run back and stay with Lucy and have them tell me it would be okay. I wanted someone else to fight the battle with me.

Yet I was done letting my family get hurt for me.

Aryan stopped the car outside of the lab's fence and looked over at me. "Are you nervous?"

I nodded. "It's weird walking into this. I feel like it's a mistake."

"It'll be worth it."

I hugged him, burying my face in his shoulder to hide my tears.

"Hey, we're going to get out of this. I won't let anything bad happen to you. I promise."

"Don't make promises you can't keep."

He pulled me back to look in my eyes. "I'm not, Julia."

I kissed him and pulled him closer to me, closing the distance between us. I never wanted to be away from him. Not when I was going to be around Andreas instead.

His hands slid into my hair and I hated that we were going to be separated. Even though we were going in together, I knew Andreas would want me alone. I didn't even know what he'd do with Aryan.

"Aryan," I breathed, pulling back.

He nodded, catching his breath.

"I love you."

He looked at me and his expression was unreadable. Was he mad at me? Did he not feel the same way? What if I was saying this and making him vulnerable and causing something bad to happen? I couldn't live with myself if I did that.

Then he smiled and kissed me again. "I love you too."

The gates opened and Andreas walked toward us. He had his lab coat on along with a pair of goggles on his head.

I took a deep breath. "Are you ready?"

He nodded, kissed me one more time, then took his glasses off. He put them in the glove compartment before getting out of the car, the keys in his hand.

I got out and put my hands in my pockets to hide the shaking. I was so nervous. What if Andreas just killed us on the spot?

There was a security guard watching us from a post about ten feet off the ground, near the gates. I figured he was the gate-keeper. It was necessary after Aryan and I had escaped.

Andreas stepped up to us and his eyes were only on me. He smiled and pulled me in for a hug. "I've missed you, Julia. It's been too long."

My mouth wouldn't move so I just nodded.

He pulled back and held out a hand for Aryan. "It's good to see you as well."

"Likewise." Aryan said, putting on a fake smile and accepting the handshake.

Andreas stepped out of my way and waved his hand at the lab and a person walking toward us. I couldn't make out who it was but he, too, was wearing a lab coat. "We have a lot of catching up to do. I believe you know Brayden?"
