Chapter 17

"Kel, have you seen Julia? She's not in her room." Lucy yelled from the top of the steps.

I looked at Aryan and sighed. "I'm down here!"

Aryan had changed after we left the lab. He was a tad more guarded and reserved but I knew he would talk about what was bothering him when the time was right.

But he was still Aryan. The Aryan I loved. The Aryan who loved me.

He had his glasses back and his hair was down, longer than I remembered. He was wearing a muscle shirt and shorts, which I was surprised by. But man, did he make it look good.

In true Aryan fashion, he wouldn't let me help with cooking. He made me wait until the finished product so I wouldn't be biased. It was stupid but at least I didn't have to do any work.

Lucy came running down the steps and sighed in relief when she saw me sitting on the counter beside Aryan's pot of chili. "Why didn't you wake me up?"

"You were sleeping." I said, shrugging.

She paused when she saw I was looking right at her. A smile broke out on her face. "You can see again."

I nodded.

She ran over to me and pulled me off the counter to hug me. It was the most intense bear hug I'd ever gotten.

"Just because I can see again doesn't mean I'm not fragile."

She let go of me all at once and the worried look returned to her face. "I-I'm sorry. I should know better than to assume, right?"

I hated seeing the pained look on her face. I hugged her again and feeling her wings made me miss my own. I could tell she missed them, too, as her hug was different than usual. Even different than a 'human' hug.

"Where's Holden?"

"The basement. He's hiding."

I sighed. "Because of me, right?"

"Julia, don't get upset over him. He's been through worse." Aryan said.

"I need to talk to him."

"Do you want me to go with you?"

I shook my head. I headed toward the basement knowing both Aryan and Lucy were watching me. Waiting for me to crack under pressure.

I opened the door and walked down the steps. Soft music came from one corner of the room, something I didn't recognize at all. Holden was sitting on a rug in the middle of the room with his legs crossed under him. He had his eyes shut and his head was tilted up. It looked like he was meditating.

"How can you do that if you believe in God?" I asked, stopping at the bottom of the steps.

He turned his head toward me but left his eyes closed which totally freaked me out. "I'm not denouncing God nor my faithfulness towards him. I just like feeling peaceful and less stressed."

"Okay. Just don't have Aryan doing this to freak me out."

He smiled and opened his eyes. "You can see again."

I nodded. "Maybe my soap trick worked after all."

He rolled his eyes and patted the spot beside him.

I walked over and sat down. I noticed the small jar of potpourri on the coffee table though I couldn't smell anything abnormal. "If my vision came back, could that mean that I might go back to normal?"

He pursed his lips. "I'd give it a third of a chance. There's no way of really knowing unless I tested your blood."

"I'd still have to go to the hospital?"

He nodded. "Just so I can use proper machinery."

"How long will all the tests take?"

"A few minutes for the MRI then I'll run your blood through several machines to separate it and test it."

"Test it for what?"

"Abnormalities."

"Like what?"

"Well I can compare it to Lucy and Kellan's to see if yours is different."

I sighed. "I don't have to stay hooked up to any IVs or anything?"

He shook his head. "Certainly not. I can look up previous samples of your blood as well as use what I've already taken so I don't have to draw any more."

"When do you want to leave?" I asked. I was scared to death. I hated the thought of being in another hospital with more needles and tests run. But Holden wouldn't hurt me. I didn't have anything to worry about.

"I thought you were against going."

"I want to be normal again. As soon as possible."

"We will do everything we can, Julia."

I nodded, tears pricking my eyes.

"Shall we pack?"
