Chapter 15
"What do you want to know about Warren?" Holden asked. He was sitting in a chair near my bed, his fingers drumming on the arm rests.
Aryan was sitting on the bed beside me. "How did he and Lucy meet?"
Holden laughed. "That's a long story. Are you sure you're up for it?"
I nodded. "I need to know."
"Well Lucy lived in Georgia for many years. She was very keen on traveling, from what I've heard. At the time, she was studying medicine. This was around the 1960s. Medicine was not nearly as advanced as it is today. Lucy studied in various hospitals across the south and came across Warren. He taught her everything she knows and helped her with her own healing abilities. He was the only human who knew about angels. Over their time together, she knew that if she ever needed someone to be there for her, it was him. They went their separate ways and when she had you, she reached out to him and sent you to him."
I turned my head towards Aryan's general direction. "Weren't you living with Lucy then?"
"Yes. We weren't as close then as we are now."
My brows furrowed. He wasn't making any sense. He and Lucy had been friends for several centuries. If they knew each other for that long then why, only in the 60s, would they keep things from one another?
"What?"
"I just... I'm surprised he knew about angels. That's all." How could I tell Aryan that I thought he was lying to me? It would crush him, crush me. I didn't want him to think I didn't trust him. I didn't want to think he couldn't trust me.
"Warren was very young at the time. He apparently skipped several grades in school and finished medical school early. Close to Aryan's human age. Working with Lucy gave him experience that he wouldn't have got otherwise."
"How do you even put that on a resume?"
Holden chuckled. "I've asked that myself."
"So do you think he's a good doctor?"
"I think that he knows enough, for a human. I don't think he's the most qualified to be helping you though. He would never think to check your tears or your blood or even your body movements. His human brain doesn't understand your angelic one."
"Holden... what if... what if Andreas hurt me enough that there's nothing angelic left in me?"
"Don't be absurd-"
"Holden, she has a point. He's twisted enough to do damage of that kind. Hell, it was done to him."
"God did what he did because Andreas broke the law."
"I know that. What I'm saying is-"
"It's very well possible, Julia. I've never seen Andreas do this before, so I don't have anything to base your case off of."
"How do I know then?"
"We just have to let things run their course, Julia."
"I'm tired of waiting. I'm tired of feeling so helpless. I want answers. I want to know what's wrong with me and if I'll ever get better."
"Julia, we're trying to help you-"
"But you're not." I said, shaking from how angry I was. "You're making things worse."
"Julia-" Aryan started.
Holden cut him off. "She's right, Aryan."
"Holden, what are you-"
"Julia, I'm trying to help you but I just don't know what to do. I want to fix things for you, I do."
I wiped the tears from my eyes. "I just... I need to be alone for a while."
I heard Holden stand up and move his chair. But it was Aryan who spoke. "Julia, do you want me to stay?"
I was still so afraid, especially of being alone. But I needed to get over that and face my fears and I couldn't do that with someone around me all the time. I shook my head and bit my lip.
Neither of them said anything. The door opened and then shut, and I was alone.
