Chapter 14

I didn't bother turning the lights on. I couldn't see anyway so it wouldn't matter. Things would still be in their places regardless.

I turned the faucet on and waited for the water to get hot. The towel in my hand was cotton and soft. I didn't know what color it was but that didn't matter.

I knew where the soap was kept and had no trouble finding it to the right of the cold-water faucet. I covered the towel in soap then got it wet with the hot water before putting it against my eyes. I winced as the soap stung.

"What are you doing?"

I sighed heavily. "I thought I had five minutes to myself."

"Not in this house." Aryan walked over to me and took the towel from me.

"I guess I shouldn't be surprised." I'd never liked the time to myself at the hospital. I was always afraid of my own thoughts or what was coming later that day. I could never enjoy it. But being semi-normal, I felt like I didn't have to worry as much and I could just... relax.

He helped me to the toilet seat and pulled me into his lap. "What were you trying to do with this?"

"Warren said my eyes didn't look like normal blind eyes. I thought maybe if I scrubbed hard enough, I could get my vision back."

Aryan was quiet and I knew he was judging me. Just like everyone did.

I sighed. "I don't expect you to understand-"

"Julia-"

"I just thought you'd hear me out instead of assuming I'm crazy. I thought you weren't-"

His arms tightened around my waist as I tried to stand up.

"Let go of me." I cried, trying to push his arms away.

"Julia, listen to me."

I groaned in frustration.

"Why are you so stubborn?"

"If you're just going to be mean then-"

"No, I think you're on to something. I just don't know how jamming soap into your eyes is healthy."

"What else am I supposed to do then?"

"Wait here while I go get Holden." He said, getting to his feet. He gave no warning and I would have fallen to the floor if he hadn't caught me and helped me back up.

"What do you think you're doing?" I said, pushing him away.

"Just trust me, Julia. Please."

I sighed.

He took my hand and squeezed it. "I'll only be two minutes."

"Make it a short two minutes."

"Aryan tells me you're trying to make yourself un-blind." Holden said as he opened the bathroom door with a creak.

I sighed. "Wouldn't you try it if you were in my position?"

"I suppose I would."

Aryan sighed. "You're supposed to be on my side."

"She's family."

"You've known me longer."

"We can discuss that later."

"Can you stop talking about me and help me?" I said, frustrated.

"Cry." Holden said sternly.

"What?"

"Cry. Produce tears. I want to test them and see if I can find anything."

"Do you think that will help?"

"Would you rather I stick a needle in your eye?"

"No."

"Alright then."

I jumped when he took my hand and put a test tube in my palm.

"Put a few tears inside the tube and I'll see what I can find."

"How are you going to test it? You don't have any equipment here."

"I don't need any equipment. I told you I've been a doctor for a long time."

"Well... what do you think of Warren?" I asked, changing the subject.

"Why are you asking me?" There was amusement in his voice.

"I want to know what you think of him as a doctor."

Holden was silent for a few seconds before he spoke. "I think that he must know something if Lucy trusts him with you."

"Holden-"

"Cry. Then we'll talk."
