Chapter 8
The fence was abandoned. The electricity wasn't on. I was free!
I ran to the gate and groaned. There was a lock holding it shut. I'd have to climb.
I started up the fence, ignoring the pain in my hands each time I gripped the wire. I was just to the top with a beautiful view of freedom when I heard a noise that sounded like a light switch. Shit.
I looked to my right and Lucy's dad was at the switch box. He was watching me with a smug expression on his face. I knew what he was doing.
The fence felt hot in my hands and I knew I had seconds before I would be shocked. I glanced at the ground before closing my eyes and letting myself fall. I fell for what seemed like hours. The wind whipped around me and stung my eyes. My arms and legs felt heavy. I wanted to flail but I knew that wouldn't do me any good.
I hit the ground and it had to be the worst pain ever. This time, I didn't pass out.
Lucy's dad walked up to me with his hands in his lab coat pockets. "You're running out of second chances, Julia." He knelt down beside me and pulled a syringe from his pocket. I knew he was going to put me to sleep and, for once, I welcomed it. I wanted to be put out of my misery.
Instead of putting the needle in my arm, he pushed it into the skin beside my eye. Then the other one.
Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, he pulled a bottle of eye drops from his pocket and squirted some in each eye. And, man, it burned.
I was so out of breath that I couldn't even scream. I just let the tears fall from my eyes and let him hurt me. Maybe I was never going to get away. Maybe I was never going to see Lucy or Kellan again.
One thing I knew for sure was that I was done fighting. I didn't have the strength. Not if I wasn't going to win.

"Give me your arm." Andreas said from my left side. There were two other men in the room, one being Terrance. I didn't know the other one's name but I called him Bob in my head.
I obeyed without hesitation. The pain in my body from my latest fall had subsided only a day after the incident. I knew I was getting medicine to heal faster but I was sure my angel blood was helping also.
A small pinch tugged the skin inside my elbow and I knew he was taking blood. It was a routine thing he did every morning. Then he'd feed me. If I didn't cooperate, I didn't get to eat. I cooperated after saying no the first time.
He put a band aid over the mark then stood up. His chair slid back on the floor, scraping. "Terrance, bring her something to eat. We're done here."
I rolled onto my side and pulled the covers back up over my arms. Being alone sucked but it was better than being around the three of them. I typically slept when I was alone though most of the time I tried finding Lucy or Kellan. I figured that if Aryan were still alive, he would have tried to communicate with me. I hadn't heard a word from him since the last I saw him.
That was weeks ago.
Andreas set a tray down beside the table then tapped my shoulder. "Your food is here. I'll come get the tray later."
I said nothing. I just waited for the door to shut before I sat up. Breakfast consisted of a banana, grapes, and a kid size bottle of apple juice. It wasn't my favorite meal but at least it was something.
I cracked the lid on the apple juice and drank all of it. Then I laid back down in the bed and tried to sleep.
