I watch as the rain falls outside the car. It was a cool September day. Mark and I were heading to the baby doctor to find out the gender of the baby. I was 18 and a half weeks along. I was excited, Mark said he was leaning towards a boy but didn't really care. No matter what it was, we would love it.
"You ready?"
"Yeah." he says
"What're you hoping for?"
"I kinda said I want a boy but a girl would be fine too. I'll love and care for it either way." he says, taking hold of my hand
"I just want it to be health and happy growing up."
I put a gentle hand on my stomach. It had grown to a point where you could tell but wasn't mind numbingly obvious. I had gained about 20 pounds. Since I was about 10 pounds underweight (which I didn't know) I had to gain 40 pounds by 9 months. I was fine with that. I've always been smallish for my height, so if I had to gain weight for this baby then I was gonna damn well do it. We arrive for our appointment and wait a little while. Before we know it, we're called in. The nurse made me answer some questions first but we went in soon. We had to wait about 15 minutes for the doctor so we chatted for a little bit.
"Are you nervous?" Mark asks
"A little. More excited than nervous."
"Don't worry. I'm nervous too." he says
I give him a little kiss. Mark was always so loving. He put up with me when I was grumpy, cuddled me when I was sad and was happy when I was. He helped me with things, and was already being an awesome dad. I smile and mouth an I love you. He smiles and replies silently I love you too. I hear a knock on the door.
"Hey there. How are you doing today Taylor?" the doctor says as he comes in
"I'm doing very well. Thank you"
"Great! Can I have you stand on the scale? I need to weigh you."
I go over and look at my weight. 137. Approximatly 20 pounds gained.
"OK, progressing nicely. Anything you'd like to bring to my attention?" he says
"Yeah actually. I'm having a little bit of back pain, is that normal?"
"Yes. Your stomach is getting heavier and harder to carry so you might have a little bit of that." he says
"OK. Thanks Dr. Harley."
"Alright. You two ready to find out if its a boy or a girl?" he says
We nod.
"OK, I'll go get the radiologist. Be right back."
They bring in the radiologist and tell me what's gonna happen, etc etc. I lift up my shirt and they put the jelly stuff on (it was cold) and put the scanner on and move it around. I hear the heartbeat. It actually brought tears to my eyes.
"Well?" Mark says
"Its a girl!" she says
Mark and I smile. I see Mark wipe his eyes just a little.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm just very happy." he says
I grip his hand tightly. We leave and Start to drive home. I call my mom on the way to tell her the news. She cried when I told her she was so happy. We go home and live out our day before going to bed.
