Eli's P.O.V.
A few weeks later
Friday, August 10th
It's been a few weeks since Harper has been in the hospital. And she's still in a coma. The kids have a few more days of summer. I still not have been able to go back into the house, and I have been living my parents which it's kind of been cramped but it's nice having dad and mom around to help. . Olivia is now 7 months old. She is able to hold her head up on her own now reaching for everything.
I just been spending time with them attempting to fill the void of my wife and their mother. But she is irreplaceable. She is my everything.
But laying in my bed at my parents with Olivia sleep in the bassinet next to the bed. Jackson laying bedside me, and Diamond down the hall.
We got up and got dressed. We ate some breakfast, and then we were off to the hospital. I had gotten the Mercedes deep cleaned and again it was too much of a memory to that night so I sold it. So now we have the Navigator, BMW, and my F-150.
"Hey Daddy, you think mommy would like this?" Jackson asked me
I looked in the rear view mirror and he had this bracelet in his hand that he made at summer camp earlier in the week
"Yeah buddy, she sure will" I said putting my eyes back on the road
But we finally pulled up at the hospital. We went upstairs to her room, and the kids came and sat down. They sat on the chairs near the window and I pulled a chair up.
We were in there for about 15 minutes when a knock came to the door.
"Come In" I yelled
Dr. Brown came into the room.
"Hi Mr. Washington can we speak outside for a moment" he stated
"Sure" I said standing up with Olivia in my arms
"Kids I will be right back, stay here don't touch anything" I said handing Olivia to Diamond
"Ok" they both responded
I went out into the hall and stood in front of Dr. Brown.
"Mr. Washington I wanted to bring you out here to talk about your wife's condition with you. It's been about a couple of weeks and there is no change. She has not improved at all." he said
"So what are you saying?" I asked
"If your wife doesn't improve, I would like you to consider taking her off of life support. Also consider organ donation." he said
"Oh my gosh" I said putting my hand over my mouth and a tear escaped
I never thought living my life without Harper.
"Is there anything we can do?" I asked
"We have done all we can do at this moment, I know it's a lot just take these pamphlets, this first one is about hospice care which means they will be here for your during this process as your wife may pass and this is organ donation." he said handing me some pamphlets
I began to cry harder and leaned up against the wall.
"Again Eli just think about it, you don't have to decide right now. I just want you to be prepared for the fact that your wife might not wake up." he said
"She might not wake up" I said putting my hands on my face
"Eli!" I heard Diamond yell
We ran into the room and Harper had her eyes open. Dr. Brown was right after me.
I walked immediately to her bedside and grabbed her hand and kissed it
"Blink once if you can hear me" he said and she blinked
He took a pen light and flashed it in and out of her eyes. He moved to her feet and lifted up the blanket. He took his unclicked pen and rubbed it up and down her feet.
"Harper blink twice if you can feel this" he said
She blinked twice.
"Harper I need you to wiggle your toes" he said
She wiggled her toes. I smiled at seeing how well she was doing.
"We are going to get a few CT scans, and MRIs to make sure everything is good. We are going to leave you on that ventilator just until we can make sure everything is ok. But otherwise I have to say Harper you are a miracle." he said
"Mommy look, I made this for you" Jackson said and placing the bracelet and putting it on her wrist.
I just bent my head down and kissed her forehead. I was so happy that she did wake up so that I wouldn't have to make that tough decision.
A few hours later
3:35p
The kids were napping, Jackson and Diamond on the couch, and Olivia laying in her car seat. All of the tests were completed, and Dr. Brown came back in the room.
"Eli and Harper, we have some news." he said
"Ok" I said grabbing Harper's hand
"The CTs are good, but your MRIs have came back different. You have a couple broken ribs. And you still have a little bleed in your belly. So we want to fix that, and we are currently prepping the OR. Then we will go from there." he said
"But otherwise she is good?" I asked
"Perfectly fine, we just want to go in fix this little bleed before it becomes a major problem." he said
"Thank you Doc." I said
"Harper we will be back to get you in just awhile." he said
She blinked in confirmation.
12:04a
My mother came and grabbed the kids because I didn't know how long this surgery would take. And I did not want them to have to be here all night long.
I just cannot believe I have went from thinking I would have to choose between life and death for my wife. But I am so grateful to God our Savior that He saw fit for her to remain in the land of the living.
I wait about another hour and Dr. Brown came out with scrubs, slippers over his shoe, and a custom head covering for the Atlanta Hawks. I stood up and waited until he got closer.
"How did she do?" I asked
"She did absolutely marvelous a lot better than we expected, she had a little drop and spike in blood pressure. But we got the bleed. Her lung is doing fine. They are stitching her up, as we speak, and she will be on nasal canals oxygen and absolutely no ventilator." he said
"That's awesome, thank you doc. When will I be able to see her. " I said shaking his hand
"No problem, as soon as she goes into recovery, we want to place her back in ICU for a couple of days then a step down unit to make sure her body is responding well." he said
He walked away, and Shaun had told me to call him when she gets out of surgery. I pulled out my phone and dialed his number and he picked up on the second ring.
"Hey Eli, did she come out?" he asked
"They are taking her recovery. Doc says everything went great. They want to keep her in ICU for a couple of days, but then will put her in a step down unit." I said
"Thank God. I was praying." he said
"I am going to go see her now. If anything changes I will let you know." I said
"Alright man, kiss her for me." He said
"I sure will goodnight" I said before hanging up the phone
The nurse came and got me and took me back to recovery to see her.
I grabbed her hand and called her name.
"Hey Harper, sweetheart" I said gently rubbing her shoulder
She opened her eyes gently and looked over at me and gave my a small sweet smile.
"There he is" she said
I smiled back at her.
"You gave me quite the scare there." I said
"I got to keep you on your toes some how." She responded and chuckled lightly
The nurses came and moved her into her room. She had fallen back asleep.
When we got set up in her room. I pulled the chair next to the bed and laid my head where her head was.
Harper's P.OV.
The next Day
I woke up and looked to my right and saw the head of my sweet husband. I picked my hand up and began to rub the back of his head. He began to stir and sit up and wiped his eyes.
"Good Morning sleepy head" I said
"Good Morning my love" he leaned over and gave me a kiss that lingered for awhile
"How are you feeling?" He questioned
"All around sore, where are the kids?" I asked
"Ever since you been in here my mother has really stepped up and she has been helping with them." I said
"Wow, hell must've froze over" she said
"Nope she just has been the mother I always wanted." I explain
"Honey I do have to say I am sorry." She said as she grabbed my face
"For what sweetheart?" I asked
"For letting the vile of my mother get into our family.  I should've listened to you. Not only would I not be in this position but the kids would not have been either." She explained
"Harper don't apologize, we all have to live with our decisions. And we cannot change the things of the past. We cannot change people we love. There is not absolute way we could've know that your mother was involved in that dangerous stuff. But what I do know is that you tried and there is nothing more she can do." I said
"Speaking of my mother where is she?" she questioned
"She's with the police" I said
Harper and I continued to talk and just love on each other
