The band decided to take a break, as soon as that was decided Stevie started working on her solo album. Tom wrote a song he decided to sing with Steph thanks to the advice of their producer Jimmy Iovine. Meanwhile, its been months and I still haven't talked to Lindsey. I would go over to Tom's house sometimes when I needed someone.

After Tom finished recording his song with Stevie the Heartbreakers started to record their album. I sat in the control panel, watching it all unfold.
"Hey Em!" Tom said through the mic.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"See those papers next to you?" I looked over at a pile on the desk. "Yeah I see em Tom."
"The one on top, 'Insider.' Tell me what you think!" Tom replied.
Reading through the words I automatically fell in love with it, it was a a beautiful ballad.
Pressing the button on the control panel I spoke into the mic, "This is amazing!"
Tom grinned, "Good, wanna sing it with us?"
My stomach fell out, "Oh of course!!"
"Come on down here then!" Tom waved me to their spot. Giggling, I skipped to the door of the studio; "Tom, I thought Stevie was singing this one?" Jimmy said through the speaker.
He shook his head, "I told her I wanted to keep it, she got the one song I want Emily for this one."
Jimmy shrugged, "Alright, its not like I think its a bad choice. Em is her own star with a powerhouse voice. Doll, if you ever want to do a solo album I can be your guy." He winked. I smiled into the mic, "Actually, this morning it's just been made official that I'll make a solo album."

The band and Jimmy all clapped, "Thank you, but can we start the song now?" I asked.
Tom scratched his head, "Oh yeah yeah, start playing it Ben." Ben started playing the organ and the rest of the band followed. The music was so pretty I didn't want it to stop, but then Tom started to sing.

"You've got a dangerous background
And everything you've dreamed of
Yeah you're the Dark Angel
It don't show when you break up "

I leaned closer to the mic, singing harmonies.

"And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one left in the dust
Yeah I'm the broken hearted fool
Who was never quite enough.
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars
I'm an insider."

The reason I loved the song much was the lyrics, they just seemed so powerful. I couldn't figure out why the song got to me, but it made me tear up.

"It's a circle of deception
It's a hall of strangers
It's a cage without a key
You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you couldn't trust
Yeah I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust.
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars
I'm an insider.
I'll bet you're his masterpiece
I'll bet you're his self-control
Yeah you'll become his legacy
His quiet world of white and gold
And I'm the one who ought to know
I'm the one you left to rust
Not one of your twisted friends
I'm the one you couldn't love."

It then hit me, was the song about me? I tried clearing that out of my head. I was just being selfish, Tom wouldn't write a song like that about me. Or would he? I gazed over at him, strumming his guitar. He stared right at me, I quickly looked the other way.

"I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars--I'm an insider."

Jimmy clapped his hands. "That was a great first run, let's try recording now!"
My eyes almost bugged out of my head, we weren't even recording?!?! I should have known better than to think it would be a one take wonder. I wish desperately it had been one, no matter how much I loved the song. The nagging feeling was unnerving.
