Caspar's POV
The next day Joe asked to borrow a pencil during History. I immediately obliged, not thinking twice. But I did glance at the teacher to see if he was watching. It looked like Mr. Kurt couldn't care less what was happening.
Then later, at lunch, Joe forgot his lunch money. The look on Joe's face was so sad, that it physically hurt my chest. He was about to walk out of the lunch line but I grabbed at his hood and pulled him back towards me. Luckily, I was next in line.
"Open your palm. Here," and just like that, I handed Joe my lunch money. Joe stood there, too confused to move.
"Next!" the lunch lady hollered. Joe looked back at me, silently asking if it was okay. I smiled and nodded my head back at him. Slowly, he trudged forward.
"You didn't have to do that Caspar," Joe said once he got his food.
"I know, but I wanted to. You would've starved!" I pointed out.
"I could've toughened it out," Joe argued.
"I know, but now you have food," I answered.
"Thank you Caspar," Joe said, taking a bit out of his sandwich.
"Anytime," I replied. Joe took his knife and cut the sandwich in half, and gave the other half to me. I smiled thankfully at him.
The bell soon rang. Joe and I got up to go to our next class. I didn't have that one with Joe, so we headed our separate ways. After forever class was over and I was practically skipping to go to my next class. I got there super early and decided to sit right in the middle.
"Hey Joe!" I called excitedly when I saw Joe walk in. He saw me and started towards me. Something seemed to be off, but I just ignored it.
"Hey Caspar," Joe responded monotonously.
"What's wrong?" I asked, concerned now.
Joe rolled his eyes at me. "None of your business."
"Oh. Okay," I mumbled. For the rest of class Joe and I never talked to each other.
Class ended and Joe rushed to get out. I felt extremely hurt. Did I do something? I was sure I didn't, but maybe I did. Maybe he knows that I like him! I thought. Oh no! I bet he's disgusted with me.
Feeling glum, I slowly walked out the door and into the crowded hallway. I was walking towards my locker when I saw Joe there arguing with some random guy.
"I said that I'm not interested, Bryan," I heard Joe remark. What? Since when has Joe not been interested? I thought.
"Please Joe! I've given you dozen of roses! I've taken you on several dates! I've opened doors for you, pulled out chairs, driven you around, what more could you want?" Bryan asked desperately.
"I'm sorry Bryan, but that doesn't pull my trigger. Now if you excuse me, I have to get to Maths now," Joe said, pushing past a disheveled Bryan.
"Please Joe, I love you," Bryan croaked out at Joe. Joe froze on the spot. All of a sudden everyone stopped moving and turned to look at Joe. Joe slowly turned on his heel to look Bryan in the eyes. Everybody held their breath, anxious to see what Joe would say.
"Well I don't love you." There was a synchronized gasp when he said that. But apparently Joe wasn't done. "And what you feel for me isn't love. You feel the three main neurotransmitters that are involved in this stage; adrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin. Especially the last one. Serotonin is one of love's most important chemicals that may explain why when you're falling in 'love', they consume your thoughts."
Nobody moved a muscle. Heck, I wasn't even breathing. First Joe told somebody who loved him that he didn't love them back. Then he went on to explain what love was. From a scientific point of view.
Joe's face was expressionless as he said it. Then just like that, he turned around and headed to class. Everyone in the hallway watched Joe leave, then looked back towards Bryan. Bryan was helplessly looking at where Joe stood. Then an announcement came over the intercoms.
"Attention students. You are all ten minutes late to class. I suggest you go there now unless you all want a detention."
That got everyone moving again. People were rushing to get to their classes, pushing and shoving anyone and anything. I rushed toward History class. When I got in, the teacher did not look very happy.
-----------------------
The final bell rang, meaning the school day was finally over. I rushed to my locker to grab my books and bag. Slinging my backpack over my shoulder, I ambled towards my car. It was always chaos trying to get out of the parking lot right after school.
"Caspar, wait up!" I heard a yell. I turned around and saw Joe running towards me. Even though he hurt my feelings during class, I was still happy to see him.
"Hey, I just wanted to say sorry for giving you the cold shoulder during English today. It's just that I had Bryan before that class and he really got on my nerves," Joe explained, slightly out of breath.
"It's okay. It wasn't your fault, you were just in a bad mood," I said, smiling at him.
Joe shook his head at me. "You always say it's okay Caspar, and I know it isn't. I've been a terrible friend lately, and it's time I start acting like a best friend to you."
"Awe, Joe, you already do act like a best friend. You're allowed to have bad days, Joe. Now tell me, what happened with Bryan? I thought you liked him," I said.
"I did at first, but he was too romantic. His gestures were too much. I like a person who does little things for me."
"Little things?" I asked.
Joe nodded his head and started smiling like crazy. "Yeah. It's the little things that count. Like when I forget a pencil, and they give me the one they're currently using, even though they need it to take notes. When I forgot my notebook back in Maths, and they were kind enough to give it to me. Giving me their lunch money, even if it meant that they would starve. Always taking the blame and being more of a sidekick so I look like I'm the superhero. The little things that show what a selfless, caring, magnificent person they are."
After Joe's speech, I stood there speechless. I wanted to say something, but my jaw was immobilized. Then Joe said something that I didn't think I'd ever hear him say.
"Caspar Richard George Lee, I love you."
Once again, I was speechless. Joseph Graham Sugg; my crush of five years, the person who doesn't believe in love, just told me that he loves me. I said the first thing that came to mind.
"Checkmate," I said.
"Huh?" Joe asked, looking like a lost puppy.
"Checkmate. It's what a person says when they have won at chess," I explained.
"I know. Why did you say that?"
"Because I won your love," I answered softly. Then I leaned down and kissed him.
