Chapter Twelve - Car Love
Waiting for Max is like waiting for sun in this country, long and painful. I just wanted to get to school and get this day over with so I can move onto the next.
Thomas Goodings party is tonight and I decided that I want to go, it'll take my mind off some things and hopefully I'll get drunk and won't remember anything. Or maybe it will take the pain away for a little while.
I stuck to what I said and am still sticking to it now, I'm not gonna cry over this situation. I'm not gonna cry over the break up and I'm definitely not gonna cry over Zack. He's really just not worth it.
Zack hadn't even tried to ring me, text or make any contact with me at all since I broke with him yesterday. I was glad but at the same time I'm a little down, I guess it just shows that he doesn't care as much as thought he originally did.
I pulled out my phone from my bag to check the time, it read twenty past eight on the front screen. I scrolled through to send Max a new text message. I was tapping in the message and jumped as I heard a car horn from opposite the road.
I looked up to see Max waving through the window of his car. I admired the sight of his new car, of course with his learners permit sticker on the front and back of it. The new shiny red colour shone in the bright daylight and I have to admit, I kinda love his car.
I jogged over to the passenger side of the car and hopped into the seat. The inside of the car was black leather and the sound that the car made was beautiful. I settled back into the seat and shut my eyes, taking in this moment. But I got pulled out of my happy moment by someone next to me cleared their throat.
I opened my right eye first and peered over towards my right hand side to see that Max was sat forward, hand lent on the steering wheel and eyes raised at me.
"What? Never seen a girl trying to enjoy a car before?" I commented on his judgement.
"I'm taking it that you like my car then," he replied. It wasn't even in the form of a question just a statement.
"Like it? I think I'm in love with this car," I smoothed my hand across the leather on the seat.
"Yeah, my dad put aside some money for me and the car was paid for with some of it," he said lowly.
I knew that it was a pretty bad subject for him. His Dad has been away on business in Australia for the last five years and doesn't visit Max very often. He doesn't talk about him often either. But it would be a touchy subject for someone who hasn't seen their dad since they were eleven. I've never brung it up and seeing the look on his face, I'm not gonna bring it up now.
"Well, I love your car and you for picking me up in it," I looked out the front windscreen.
"What did you just say?" he asked whipping his head round to see me.
"I said I love your car," I repeated.
"No, the other thing that you said afterwards.." he carried on.
"Thank-you for picking me up," I said and leant over to place a kiss on his cheek. I saw a red tint unveil in his face slightly but he regain his normal coloured when he cleared his voice.
He finally pulled out of my drive and we were now on our way to school. Ten minutes late.
I flicked on the radio to see what tunes would blast out first. I was surprised, I thought that gangster rap would be blaring out of the speakers but it turned out to be Radio One instead with Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know.
I was humming along to the tune and was about to start singing it out loud but then I remembered that I wasn't the only one in the car.
"I heard about what happened yesterday, during your free lesson," he explained.
