The Next Day
Dee groans at the similar replies received from Key and Jae, their refusal to entertain her possibly doing the show not only annoying but disappointing. Here they go, dictating shit all over again. She rolls her eyes, leaving them on read as she sighs.
She taps the phone against her hand before quickly unlocking it. She doesn't have to scroll far to find his name but after a few rings, it goes to voicemail. She tries not to frown, hanging up and tossing the phone to the side. So much for that.
She lies back, closing her eyes as she tries to make sense of the situation. But all that comes to mind are memories; the way they always rapped together in the car, the many videos they recorded on this very couch of each other freestyling, the songs they wrote together between kisses, expressing their everlasting love.
She mumbles incoherently, opening her eyes and grabbing her phone. I need to get this shit out. The FaceTime calls rings a few times before an annoyed voice greets her. 'Damn, so I do have a best friend?' Ki jokes. Dee can't help but laugh.
'Where the hell you been?' Ki demands, her phone inches from her face. 'I been here,' Dee replies with a laugh. 'Just tryin' to be normal.' 'Normal? You?' Ki asks before bursting into laughter.
'Shut up, Kiana,' Dee grumbles, biting her smile. 'Make me, Diamond,' Ki replies, quickly dropping her laugh for a serious expression. They burst into laughter again, neither able to take the other seriously.
When they settle down, Dee adjusts herself, resting her phone so that she can relax her arm. 'Might as well go ahead and tell me,' Ki says, disrupting her process. 'What you mean?' Dee asks, feigning confusion. 'I hear it all in ya voice,' Ki explains. 'Plus you keep poutin' and you only do that when you don't wanna tell me what's wrong.'
Dee rolls her eyes, crossing her arms. 'I hate you, you know that right?' she says loudly. 'Uh huh, love you too,' Ki replies. 'Now who ass I gotta beat when I get there?' Dee sighs, 'I got a show with Nov Valentine's Day weekend.'
The call goes silent. Ki's camera switches to the ceiling as Dee closes her eyes, preparing for the yelling to come. A few more seconds pass before Ki lets out a deep breath, 'Aight, I'm good.'
She moves the camera back to show her face, her kinky curls now in a messy bun, her smile traded for a more serious expression. 'So, what are you gonna do?'
'I don't know,' Dee admits. 'I wanna go but everything in me is tellin' me it's the dumbest shit I could do.' 'Probably is,' Ki says, nodding in agreement. Seriously? Dee sucks her teeth, 'Aight, I'm 'bout to--.'
'Diamond, if you hang up on me, I'm smackin' the shit outta you,' Ki replies. 'Nah, 'cause you not eve--,' Dee attempts. 'Did you let me finish?' Ki interrupts. 'No? Okay, so shut up and listen for once.'
Dee grumbles, huffing. You won't even tryna listen, you just wanna say somethin'.
'Like I said, yeah, it's probably stupid as hell,' Ki begins. 'But it's not for him, you're going for your fans. They wouldn't ask for you if they didn't wanna see you, right?' 'Yeah, but--,' Dee attempts to explain. 'I didn't ask for an explanation, Diamond,' Ki interjects with an annoyed expression.
Dee sucks her teeth again, 'You not my mama, Ki.' 'You sure?' Ki asks with a laugh. 'Stop bein' mean to me,' Dee pouts. 'I'm sad and you not makin' it better.'
