Amy tied back her glossy brown hair into two neat plaits, she loved having long hair, but it often got in the way.
"You ready?" Percy knocked on the door of the bathroom.
Amy looked at herself in the mirror, it was probably the last time she would before leaving. Well maybe she would glance while brushing her teeth but that was beside the point.
"Yeah...yeah I'm ready" she unlocked the door and walked out to face her brother. Percy was only slightly taller than her but they were 'practically the same' as Amy would say all the time.
"We'll have to be more sneaky this time, we don't want the life guard to catch us" Amy said
"Once we're under water it should be fine, he can't follow us there" he grinned and winked as Percy and Amy had a massive secret, one they did not know the significance of yet.
When they were both much younger, one of the older kids dared the two to climb across the rocks under the cliff, stupidly they did it. Percy, the closest to the water slipped and fell in, a strong rip current pulling him under the outcrop of rocks. Amy had screamed for help, but none would come.minutes passed and there was no sign of Percy, desperately Amy reached under the outcrop. Something grasped her hand and pulled her under. Once clear of the bubbles she could see clearly that it was Percy, she gasped but then realised her mistake, however she didn't choke in the water surrounding them. She could breath.
Being able to breath under water had given the twins a chance to explore under the cliff and that's how they found the cave.
They sneaked out the door, the workers too busy with a four year old having a tantrum, and walked out into the gravel parking area. Percy took a quick glance inside the BMW only to find a file labelled with a funny fire logo and three letters R.M.S.
"Come on Percy, you'll have more time to search that car once your in it" Amy was running in the spot her bright blue eyes filled with excitement.
They ran down the hill laughing and shouting, not caring if tourists gave them funny looks, they'd had it all before. They jumped over the grassy sand dune barrier onto the squishy and soft sand of the beach, out of breath.
The life guard was down the other side of the beach in a flagged area, so they wouldn't take to much notice of the rocky end, though there wasn't anyone in the water there so they would stick out quite a bit.
You get in first, you're more neon" Percy laughed at Amy's bright pink UV top. He was however in a Navy blue one.
"Ok fine then, means I'll be first into the cave" she smirked and ran quickly through the shallows before diving under.
Visibility was low in the More shallow areas because of the waves, so when Amy hit the end of the sand bank she could finally see through most of the murkiness of the Atlantic Ocean. She swam right, towards the outcrop of rocks where the mouth of the cave was just about visible.
A man watched suspiciously as Percy sat in the shallows whistling to himself , so much so that his dog was almost dragging the man along. Percy gave him a smile, the man grunted in disapproval before finally moving on.
"Honestly, what did the man think I was doing?" But as soon as he asked that question, he realised what the staring was about. He smirked before diving into the water himself.
He swam right down to the mouth of the cave and into the darkness. It was quite narrow and led upwards so you had to be careful not to catch your head on the rock. Percy finally surfaced in a massive chasm where stalactites and stalagmites formed around the edges. The only light source came from the candles they had managed to bring through by using plastic bags so they didn't get too wet.
"You took your time" Amy was sat on a pile of pillows. Don't even ask how they got them up.
"Yeah, just the usual nosy dog walker" He jumped onto the Pillows next to her.
Everything was pretty damp in a cave so they had done as best the could to cover most of the floor with some sort of carpet and when the left they had to cover up everything in plastic sheets.
"It would be nice to have some plants in here, but without the sunlight it's not really possible" Amy sighed looking around at their underground den.
"Well you could probably grow some moss" he scraped a small patch From the floor.
The only way in or out being the small water filled tunnel meant that what they could bring in was limited, they would have brought chairs and one of the old TVs but they wouldn't fit through the tunnel and you wouldn't be able to protect them from the water, and besides they wouldn't be able to connect anything electrical. They had managed to bring up many board games, books and crafty things. They often drew and they were both quite talented at it.
"Do you think our parents were special?" Percy asked reaching for his necklace.
"They must have been, it's too coincidental leaving a shell necklace don't you think" Amy looked down at the golden painted shell in the blue beaded string.
"Wonder what happened to them"
"I think we both wonder that all the time, I mean I sort of remember them, kind of faint shadows" Amy looked down at her water proof watch, " did you see the tide time table for today?"
"Yeah the turn is around twelve"
"Oh I should have looked at it and planned our trip better, we better go before too many kids are around the rock pools and notice us coming out"
"I am also starving, I hope they do wraps today"
