"What really compelled me to leave?" Said man reiterated. He rubbed his beard, as if in great thought.
"Yes, that was my question," Hiccup replied.
"Think we should tell him Martha?"
"I do think so Magnus," Martha said.
"Wait. Magnus? Martha? You guys, you, you're Merida's parents?"
"I know you knew that before. We know you Hiccup. We raised you for five years after all. Heck, when dragons attacked, you would hide in the corner until your father came to see you," Martha said. She was getting to the point that if he didn't know who they were, he would be scared. Little to her knowledge, not even that was true. They just happened to be lucky.
"Wait, he was scared? Of dragons? You should see him now. He looked a dragon in the eye, and his leg fell off." Astrid said. She looked at Martha doubtfully.
"No. Toothless took my leg."
"The dragon that looked you in the eye made it so your leg fell off," Astrid reconfigured her story.
"Oh Thor Almighty yes. He would sit and hide in the cellar, with Merida trying to make him feel better. How is she by the way?" Magnus asked.
"Well," Hiccup began, scratching at the back of his neck. Astrid shifted from foot to foot. She didn't want to start talking about Merida. Not until she was ready.
"She joined the Dragon Hunters, but now she's all for Berk again," Astrid said in a huff.
"Could you guys excuse us for a minute?" Hiccup asked.
"Sure," Martha said. Hiccup and Astrid were finally alone.
"What's the problem?" Hiccup asked.
"Merida. Merida is the problem."
"We talked about her earlier," Hiccup argued.
"Not how she's doing, and how you guys are friends!"
"You were talking to each other three days ago. You were teaching her about dragons when I was busy."
"Well, now I regret that!" And with said words, Astrid climbed the ladder, jumped on Stormfly, and headed for home.
I'll find what I need, and go find her. Why was Astrid born a Hofferson? Hiccup asked himself, climbing the ladder to the first floor. Martha met him when he hoisted himself to the ground level.
"Take these," Martha said. She handed Hiccup a stack of papers. "Magnus would want you to take them." Before Hiccup could ask what was going on, it got really warm in the house. The ground started shaking, and Toothless with the other dragons kept from the cellar, Toothless grabbing Hiccup. When Hiccup opened his eyes moments later, Goodwing Volcano erupted.
Toothless's wings skipped a beat, and they began falling. Hiccup got out of his daze, locking his leg in place. His brain on autopilot, he landed on a nearby island. "They, they are gone." Toothless just warbled.
"And Astrid, I have no clue what is up with her. I mean, what is up with her?" Hiccup ranted. Toothless pointed his nose toward the black cloud of ash.
"I mean, what did I do to make her that upset? It was a father trying to find out about his daughter."
This time Toothless was more vain trying to get Hiccup's attention. The black ash was heading to cover the sun."And what do I do? How do I find her?" Hiccup ran a hand through his hair. Fed up with Hiccup's lack of attention, Toothless roared his Alpha roar. Take that Hiccup. You're not the only one that can demand attention.
"What?" Hiccup asked. "Now my dragon doesn't behave?" Rolling his eyes, Toothless pointed his tail to the cloud of ash, now beginning to cover the sun. Before the pair knew it, the world became a black, cold void. The only distinct thing Hiccup could hear was Astrid's scream, along with Night Fire's.
"Astrid!" Hiccup said, flying to where he heard Astrid. Toothless was all the more frantic, because Nightfire screamed, shooting her plasma, directing the two together.
After minutes of searching, the two were found on an island, frantically searching for their better halves. "Astrid!" Hiccup screamed as the gentle snow turned to ice, hammering at the pairs. It was an unrelenting blizzard, turning a black void even darker.
"Hiccup, I'm, I'm with child," she smiled, and her stern façade quickly returned.
"What? Astrid, what? You can't just tell me I'm a father," Hiccup panicked.
"But it's true. It'll be okay Hiccup. I love you, and that's all that matters," Astrid said. The grip she had on Hiccup hand softened, and her eyes closed. By the steady breath pattern she maintained, Hiccup knew she wasn't in danger, yet.
Hiccup stared at her face, paling by the second. "Astrid, stay with me, cmon. Toothless, light this on fire," Hiccup moved a log on the ground closer. Hiccup spotted a river not to far away. "Toothless, go fish."
New game.
"Not now."
Right
(BTW, this is how Go Fish was invented)
Toothless waddled over to the river, where he began catching fish after fish. Soon, he built up a good sized pile. By then, Hiccup had a wood built up, ready to be thrown on the pile. He was cradling Astrid, waiting for her to wake up.
She had been out for two minutes before the fire warmed her up. Her eyes opened, to meet Hiccup's. "What did you say?" He asked.
"I'm with child. I found out right before we left, that's why I visited Gothi's before I came to the square, also why I was in such a rush to leave. The sooner we left, the sooner we would come back."
"So now what?" Hiccup asked.
"All I know, is we are on an unknown island, with limited resources and two Night Furies. And by the looks of it, we won't be able to leave for awhile because of, snow?"
"Oh. Goodwing, it exploded, the volcano. It looks like the ash is preventing the sunlight from getting through, hence the snow."
"Did they make it?" Astrid asked.
"No, but all the research they did, they gave to me. Ah, this'll kill Merida."
"I know, but I can tell her if you can't."
"First things first, we have to find out where Berk is," Hiccup remarked. "Then we can worry about Magnus and Martha."
"We can't get off the island," Astrid said. "We can't see the sun."
