The days seemed long and endless. While I looked over some documents I also had to be on the phone with Wilfred, to plan our wedding.
"When you do you want the wedding to be?" He asked as I looked up from my papers. My eyes were getting tired.
"Hmm..." I thought. "What about June?"
"Ah, a summer wedding." I heard Wilfred laughed into the phone. "I like that. A summer wedding it is."
"Perfect," I said as I rubbed my forehead.
"When do you want to come over and finalize the food and cake?"
"Uh," I looked at my calendar. Free was not my middle name this week. "What about next week, on Tuesday?"
There was some paper shuffling on Wilfred's side of the phone. "Tuesday's good."
"We can finally finalize the food and cake then!" I said excitedly. We talked more about our wedding until we both had to get back to our duties.
My grandfather's health wasn't getting better by the days had passed. Each day, he grew weaker and each day, documents grew higher on my desk.
I didn't mind, of course. This would be my duty, my life, when my grandfather would retire-- and it looked like his retire was soon coming.
Zain and I stood in front of my fathers bedroom door as the doctor gave him a check-up.
"He's getting weaker." I said as my hands began to tremble.
"Yes, it seems that way." Zain said softly.
"Gosh, I don't think I could stand it if you know..." I trailed off, I couldn't say the word, "die". Would my grandfather die soon?
Before I knew it tears were falling down my face when I thought about my grandfather dying.
"Oh, Lady Linda." He engulfed me into a gentle hug. "Don't think about that. His Lord isn't going to die, but I can't promise you that he won't though."
I nodded as I hid my face in his shirt. "I just-- he's always been there for me. Just the thought of losing him-- I don't know what I would do."
Zain looked at me at arms length now, wiping away my tears with his handkerchief.
"What you would have to do, is to keep smiling and move on, no matter what." He said as his eyes had encourgement in them. "That's what your grandfather would want."
I nodded as I calmed myself down, knowing that the doctor would come out soon. When he did, he looked tired and, well, sad.
"His Lord will get weaker and weaker," He told us. "I think he should retire while he still has a hold on his life."
That meant that my grandfather couldn't keep up the barriers of the Palace, on this sacred land, anymore.
"Yes, I think that would be best." I said as Zain nodded in agreement.
The doctor nodded, pleased to hear my answer.
"I guess a coronation is in order." Zain said as we watched the doctor walk off.
"But first, I need to speak with the Princes." I said, my hands trembling again. "They need to be informed."
He nodded. "I'll make arrangements." Zain was about to leave, but then stopped. "What about the Kings, Lady Linda?"
"Have them arrive after I've talked to the Princes-- and as they're gone. I would like to speak with them in an...individual group."
"Yes, My Lady." He bowed before he informed the Crowned Princes and the Kings of all Six Kingdoms about my grandfathers sudden retirement.
I didn't want to see my grandfather in his state, but I had to. I needed to tell him that I'd be taking on the role as the Lady of all Six Kingdoms, which meant that I had to keep the barriers up, at all time, like he did.
"Grandfather," I had opened the door and knocked on it briefly.
"Linda," He smiled weakly when he saw me enter his room.
He was laying down in his bed.
"I need to tell you something." I said gently as I sat down on a chair next to him.
He nodded. "I can imagine my retirement is upon me at this very moment."
"Yes, it is." I blinked back tears as I took his frail hand. "I'm going to take on my role as the Lady. So--" I swallowed back tears. "-- you don't have to keep the barriers up, grandfather."
My grandfather smiled at me. "You are a strong woman, don't forget that."
I bit down on my lower lip as I fought back tears. I mustn't let my grandfather see me cry, I thought, not when he's practically giving me farewell words. As if he'd die right here and then.
"You know that I have been keeping the barriers up since I've became Lord." He began as he held onto my hand. "So I am pleased that my granddaughter will take my place."
"And I am most honored to do that." I said as I gently tightened my grip on his hand, careful enough not to hurt him.
He nodded as he began to laugh. "Usually there's a ceremony for this, but since I cannot do that. Drastic times call for drastic measures." I could feel the power surge in his hand as I held it. "You will behold the barrier of this Palace, and this sacred land from now on."
I nodded as I felt the power, and the barrier, come to me.
My grandfather sighed in relief, the weight of the barrier leaving him. He looked younger, but he still looked weak.
"Thank you, grandfather."
"Before you go," He said tiredly. "You must know that you can never leave the Palace for a long amount of time, it has to be short. As you're away from the Palace for too long, the barrier will grow weak."
I nodded. Deep down I knew that this would happen-- once I took the barrier, but I still felt the unfairness of it.
"How long would make the barrier grow weak-- if I wasn't here?"
"Two days tops," He said. "Three, four days would be pushing it. It would be better if you had someone here, someone from our family to help keep the barrier up."
But I had no one, I thought.
"I'll let you rest now, grandfather."
"You'll make a fine, Lady, Linda." He said as he kissed me on the cheek when I had went to hug him.
Once I was outside of my grandfathers bedroom door, I slumped down to the floor as the skirts of my dress draped all around me.
What have I done, I thought as I put my face in my hands. I could never leave the house more than two days.
"How is this going to work out?" I said as I looked at the ceiling. With Wilfred, I mean, but I never dared to say that out loud.
I was confined in this Palace, because of the barrier.
Author's Note:
Awww, poor Linda...Lord Nobel Michel has to retire. Should she have told Wilfred that she was going to be taking her grandfather's place-- to take her role as Lady?
Maybe, but there was no choice-- it looked like.
Will Wilfred be okay, that she could never leave the Palace for more than two days?
Gonna have to wait and see...
Until next time, my lovelies!
