THE HOSPITAL CORRIDOR was unbearably stuffy

THE HOSPITAL CORRIDOR was unbearably stuffy. You could tell by a young girl's face, who was walking down the hall, that the air had an undertone of bleach and smelled overwhelmingly sanitary. Her nose was scrunched up and she held her breath, gripping onto a paper cup filled with water. Her stride grew faster as she turned down another corridor, stopping in front of a hospital room's door, her eyes gazing in through the glass.

The young teen gripped the door handle with her free hand and tapped her foot a few times before opening the door quietly, walking in without making any eye contact with anyone. She moved to the chair in the corner and slouched into it, exhaustion taking over her quickly. She licked her lips, trying to get rid of the parched feeling and took a long guzzle of water.

She set the empty cup down on the quaint side table next to her, her gaze now meeting the white linoleum floor as she stared intently at her beat-up sneakers. She knew that she needed to go out and buy new shoes, but she wouldn't dare ask for anything from her parents, especially right now.

She opened up her ears, making a compromise for not looking with her eyes, and she was met with silence. With the exception of the steady rhythm of the heart monitor, the delicate fan-like noise from the air purifiers and the warming sound of a father reading his daughter a book.

"Rebecca?" A soft voiced asked the girl sitting in the chair but she showed no indication to hear whoever was calling her.

"Bec?" The voice asked again a bit louder from beside her, causing her to swallow before looking up at the voice.

Her mother was kneeling next to her and Rebecca could easily notice the pain and distraught on her mother's face as much as she tried to hide it, "Becca, why don't you go to the cafe. Wait there for us?" Her mother asked, placing her hand on Rebecca's shoulder.

Rebecca's gaze met with her mother's and focused on her for a moment before answering, "I want to be here." She spoke quietly before adding, "I want to be here with Sarah."

After her statement, Rebecca's gaze finally moved to the center of the room. The twin bed was easily taking up most of the space in the room and the equipment took up even more. Her little sister laid atop the bed, her arm cradled around a tiger stuffed animal and her father next to her as she leaned into him, intently listening to the book he was reading her.

Rebecca wanted to look away. To look away from her little sister stuck in a hospital bed, her hair all gone and pushing her way through chemotherapy. Or at least, trying to. Rebecca hadn't come to see her sister in a week, her parents wanting to keep her as far away as possible considering she was only twelve years old. She was far too young to have to deal with the brutal experience her sister was going through, only likely to pass away in the end.
