THE VANISHING OF WILL BYERS PART ONE: WELCOME TO HAWKINS
six years later
REBECCA'S HEAD LOLLED to the side but the cold and condensation filled window of the bus jolted her quickly awake. She hadn't slept in the past 24 hours and she was heavily relying on the music playing through her walkman and headphones to keep her awake, not that it was being very effective on hour 25.
Her ears were filled with the loud sounds of AC DC's newest album Flick of the Switch, her fingers drumming against the seat in front of her as she paid not attention to if anyone was sitting in the chair. Her mother had gotten her the music tape for her eighteenth birthday which was only a mere two weeks ago.
But, the one thing Rebecca wanted to ask for her birthday, she waited until the day she was eighteen to ask. Legally she had become an adult and could make her own decisions even though her mother would still heavily influence them. But, this one, Rebecca's mind couldn't be changed. For her eighteenth birthday, she wanted to get a bus ride to Hawkins, Indiana to visit her father for the first time since she saw or heard from him five years ago.
The seat in front of her abruptly pushed backwards with a force that indicated someone was sitting in the chair and was annoyed with Rebecca's finger taping so she moved her hands to her lap and started tapping her feet that were stuffed into her new high top red converse.
She shoved one hand into her leather jacket that covered her oversized black t-shirt and moved her hand up to remove the necklace that was tucked underneath the shirt, still around her neck. She fiddled with the red pendant nervously, it always seemed to calm her down when she was either scared, sad or having a panic attack episode.
Unfortunately, not long after Sarah had passed and her father had left, she started to develop anxiety and it grew stronger and more uncontrollable everyday. Rebecca's mother had just deemed it a symptom of grief but it wasn't until Rebecca had a full-on anxiety attack did her mother rush her to the hospital where she was put on medication, one pill in the morning and one at night.
There had only been a few instances where she had forgotten her medication which easily resulted in another attack. Her mother grew very protective of her which is one reason why Rebecca never asked to visit her father until she was a legal adult, knowing her mother would absolutely forbid it.
Rebecca wasn't mad at her father like most would probably be in her situation. She was sad that after he left he had only called her twice which was on her thirteenth birthday and that Christmas and continued to promise her she'd see him soon, only for him to never call again over the next few years. Her father didn't even think that Rebecca knew where he lived, she hadn't even called him to let him know that she was coming to visit him which may have been a bad idea the more that Rebecca thought about it.
