Late that night, I was still awake. Earlier I had tried to go to sleep, but thoughts of Ari and Tarilamor kept me up. Sighing, I set down the cards I’d been playing solitaire with and decided I’d try sleeping again. My ears flicked back as I heard a quiet thump outside. I pushed my chair away from the table and stood up, walking quietly to the window to look outside.
It was a terrible sight. The two guards left were managing to keep the patrol at bay, but they were badly hurt. One of them was holding their arm in pain. Gasping, I ran to my door, calling to Zuer. “Open the door!” I almost fell out on top of him, surprised that he had immediately opened it, but I caught myself, my eyes wide as I looked up at the big otter. “The guards are being attacked!”
Zuer clenched his jaw and began racing down the hallway without a word. For a moment I didn’t know what to do, and then I shook my head, running after him. We were soon out a door and on the lower walkway, running toward the surrounded guards. Zuer gave a shout, turning the patrol’s attention away from the injured guards and to us instead.
The sudden realization came to me that I didn’t have a weapon. “Zuer, give me your gun or something.” To my surprise, he shook his head.
“Get some from the guards; they’re too injured to use them.” He whipped his gun out, skidding to a stop as he pulled the trigger.
As I was making my way to the guards, the patrol cat next to me fell, shot in the chest. I was really glad Zuer was fighting with me. Standing in front of the guards, I took their guns.
The quiet click of claws behind me made me swing around and a dark furred cat grunted as the butt of one of the guns hit his jaw. “Ha.” I hissed.
Zuer had completely barged into the middle of the patrol, quickly causing damage. One of the patrol cats was pressing the otter against the wall and I was about to go help him, but Zuer growled, shoving the cat to the ground.
