I sat up quickly when I woke up, and then groaned, laying back down when my head ached from getting up to fast. “Mmmph.” Sighing, I looked at my window and saw that the sunlight was glowing softly through the curtains. “Probably time for dinner...” I mumbled to myself.

Then suddenly my eyes widened. “Zuer!” I hopped out of bed, ignoring my head ache as I went to the door. “I can’t believe I made him wait this long.”

I opened the door and came out into the hallway. “Hey Zu...” The words caught in my throat and I couldn’t speak. I quickly knelt beside him. “Zuer!” I lifted his head onto my lap, looking for his injury. He was so bloodied I couldn’t tell where he was hurt and where he wasn’t. That is until I moved his shirt slightly and the rip in it revealed the dagger that was still in his side.

“No...” I pressed my ear to his chest; calming my breathing down as much as I could so I might be able to hear any sign of...I can hear his heart!

Thump...thump...

But it was slow, and his chest was rising and falling so little I could hardly see it. I couldn’t stop shaking. “Jus...just h-hold on Zuer.”

I stood up, hardly able to support myself. Looking down the hallway, I desperately hoped someone would come around the corner. How am I going to get help? I’ll just get myself lost...

“Mauriz!” I cried. “Aséo!”

Please hear me.

“Mauriz!”

I knelt back down beside the golden otter, tears beginning to fill my eyes and stream down my cheeks as the shock wore off and the pain came. My heart had never ached so badly. Even for home.

“Whitefire?”

My eyes widened and I whipped around as a tall silver wolf came around the corner. “Mauriz! Come quickly! Zuer is hurt...”

The wolf quickened his pace and knelt by Zuer for a moment, then looked at me. “Do you know what happened?”

I shook my head. “I came out and...” I choked on my own words.

Mauriz nodded. “We need to get him to the infirmary.” He carefully picked the big otter up with some difficulty and began walking.

Tears were streaming down my face and I could hardly see, but I followed Mauriz.
