I woke up, stiff and sore from fighting the patrol. I rolled over. Early morning sunlight was already sending warm rays through the fluttering curtains, and I sat up, slipping off the bed. My feet recoiled from the cold floor at first, but then I made myself stand up. I looked at the nightstand by my bed and my ears pricked.
There was a small, folded piece of paper. I carefully picked it up and unfolded it. There was just one small sentence written on it. It read:
Look outside your door.
My eyes widened and I ran to the door, opening it as my heart raced. There was no one in the hall except Zuer, who was sitting against the wall with a smile.
I gave him a glare, but smiled. “That scared me out of my mind, Zuer.”
He laughed. “So you liked the note then?”
“No.” I said. “I thought it was something from the patrol.”
He shrugged, still smiling. “Well, breakfast is on the table in your room if you’re hungry.”
“Aren’t you going to come in?”
“In a little bit.”
“Okay...” I shut the door, confused, and walked to the table. There were two mugs filled with warm drinks, two pieces of toast with honey, and something else caught my eye. I sat down in one of the chairs and picked it up. It was a rose. Late for the season, but full and beautiful anyways.
I got back up, smiling, and opened the door again, grabbing Zuer’s arm and pulling him into the room this time.
“What did I do?” Zuer laughed.
I rolled my eyes. “Just sit down and eat ya big flirt.”
He chuckled and sat next to me, and we both sipped on our warm drinks.
I looked up at him. “Thanks for the rose. It made my day ten times better already.”
“Really?” He smiled down at me. “That’s good to know.”
“Well, why wouldn’t it?” I laughed, and sat on his lap, hugging him.
His brown eyes widened for moment, then he smiled, returning the hug tightly. “I guess I don’t know.”
We finished our breakfast I changed out of my pajamas and into some shorts and a tanktop. When I came out of the bathroom, Zuer and I left the room.
“Mauriz wanted to see you for a little bit this morning.” Zuer said as we walked down the hallway.
I nodded. “Okay...do you know why?”
He shrugged. “Nope.”
