I was slowly being overtaken by the dark furred cats, Zuer as well, but he, being much stronger than I, was much better off. I managed to shove one of them away from me, but that only gave room for one of them to pin me against the wall. He flipped me around before I could react and tied my hands behind my back. Not again!
Zuer glanced my way as he fought and his eyes widened for a moment, then narrowed as he barged his way through to me. The dark furred patrol cat noticed him coming though, and tied my feet as well, then picked me up, racing to the edge of the wall. The cat paused at the edge for a moment, as if deciding whether or not he should, then jumped.
In mid air I suddenly realized who was holding me. Gustaf! My heart started pounding. Yes, I knew him. He had been after me ever since my first offense. Tarilamor had kept him as the patrol captain for as long as I could remember.
He landed impossibly quiet and soft on the ground below, looking up to watch his patrol follow him. When he turned his gaze away from them, the first thing he saw was Mauriz, who was standing quietly a few feet away, his silence intimidating.
His green eyes flashed. “What do you plan to do with her?”
Captain Gustaf narrowed his eyes. “That is Tarilamor’s decision, not the patrol’s, or even mine.”
I wasn’t sure what to think of the silver wolf. Was he here to save me, or assure my death? I wouldn’t blame him if he wanted me dead. Even so, I couldn’t help feeling hurt when he stepped aside to let the patrol pass.
Gustaf looked surprised for a moment, then led his patrol away with me in his arms. I just let out a quiet sigh. I probably deserved this.
