Lorena Eliakim

"Oh, Sweetheart," my mother cried, as she wiped the tears from her face, "I can't do this."

"It's my duty as a princess, I must do this mother," I replied, trying to calm my mother.

"Please, do not be angry unto me. I tried so hard to convince your father of some other way of marrying you but he would not come to some decent terms with me. Seems like his mind has already been made up," she sighed.

One might wonder why my mother was so nervous this morning. Today was the day I would meet my fiance. He had been chosen as my spouse since the day I was born. Unfortunately, my mother hated Joseph- my fiance. He was a man of low tolerance and he treated women as property. I was meant to be silent at any festival I went to with him and he was very short-tempered.

My father- the king- had prepared my marriage to him to be after the Passover. The Passover was a time for Jews to celebrate Moses and how he brought Israel out of slavery. Every year, every person in our village would come to the square to celebrate the holiday. Shortly, after the Passover, I would be married to Joseph. I was required to stay pure for a year until I could be married to Joseph.

I had been prepared for this my entire life. A princess had a very important duty, as my grandmother told me and I was really nervous but as my family told me, that was normal.

"Mother, it's okay," I told her, once again trying to cheer her up, "I'll have a marriage just like you and Father. No need for worrying. God will take care of me."

"You have so much faith. I have raised you well, Lorena," she smiled, putting her hand on my cheek. Then she clapped her hands loudly, summoning maids into the room to help me prepare for me to break my fast.

"Gianna! You must hurry. We have to be at the synagogue to meet Joseph shortly and I know Joseph shall not wait for any woman. Good heavens, that man has temper as short as a dagger," she warned everyone and I knew just how true her statement was.

Eventually, I was prepared to break my fast and start a proper meal. Time seemed to go by very fast and next thing I knew, I was heading to the synagogue to meet my betrothed.

"Good evening, Rabbi," my mother greeted him and I bowed my head as a sign of respect towards my elders.

"I thank you for joining in worship this early day. I must ask of you- are you and thy daughter coming here in seek of Joseph? Would my highnesses like to join us for a reading of the scripture before you speak with Joseph?" The rabbi asked, politely and my mother quickly agreed to his request.

The rabbi at our synagogue was a very polite man who looked to be fifty years of age. He was always respectful and even though my mother is the queen, he was not afraid of her, like most people. He is a good man who has a lot of dignity and help for others. He was the definition of a true man and that is what caused me to enjoy coming to the synagogue- not only because I love God, but also because the rabbi was very kind.

We sat down for a scripture reading and the rabbi started to read a passage.

"A psalm of David is what I will read unto everyone gathered here today. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me beside the still waters. He resoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the plain paths of righteousness for his name-"
