Maka's POV
I woke up early since we had school today and yawned. What a rough week... I jumped off my bed and saw a note on my closet's door.
Hey, Maka. You don't have to worry 'bout me anymore. I'm fine! See? I was even able to sneak out of Stein's lab and into your house without hurting myself. And without being noticed. That's me for ya! I'm the world's greatest assassin after all! Well, I guess I'll see you at class later. ~Black Star
I smiled to myself and got ready. I head out and found Soul had started cooking breakfast. Hm... There's something off.... Ah! It's my turn to cook today! Soul noticed me and glanced. He looked pretty angry... "Um... Sorry. I overslept. Can I make it up to you?"
He sighed and nodded. "You'd better not burn the food again tonight. And no peanut butter and jelly for... let's see..... forever." "What?! Come on, Soul!" He rolled his eyes. "Sure, y'know. If you don't want me to forgive ya..." I groaned and sat at the table. "Fine! But I'm still making some for myself!" "Deal."
After we ate, we head straight to school. I wonder how Black Star is doing... Then there's Kid too... I shook my head and slapped my cheeks. Wake up, Maka! "So, Maka. You ready for this soul attack thing later? We'll be doing it together with Kid and Black Star." I nodded confidently. "Sure thing! I got stronger thanks to-" "Black Star? You're in love with him."
My face heat up and I shook my head. "No, I'm not!" I brought a book down on Soul's head and pout, leaving his unconscious body and heading to school. What an idiot... Even though he's right... It's true and I can't deny it any longer. I'm in love with Black Star. The only question I have now is... Why?
I went up the stairs of the academy and heard footsteps following. I turned around to find no one. I'm getting a bad feeling about this... Dark clouds started forming and it started to rain. "Maka Albarn. Are you about ready to die now?" A girl called. I looked everywhere but couldn't find her.
Man... I screwed up again. How pathetic... I heard a clang from behind me and turned again. This time, I found my follower. It was a girl about my age. She had blue and black hair and was holding a weapon. A chain scythe? How is that possible? Isn't that Tsubaki's weapon form? It is... but that isn't her. I'm sure of it. It's a completely different soul.
"Are you a meister?" I asked the girl. She smirked at me and shook her head. "Nope. You're scared, right? I'm using a weapon familiar to Tsubaki. Well, that's my beloved weapon partner's special ability. She can copy a form of any other demon weapon." That's possible? I glanced up for a second and groaned in my mind. I'm still far from the top...
"Aw. You and Soul get in another fight? You have to be more nice to the guy. See? You left him and now you don't have a weapon to fight with," she teased. "Yeah, well she doesn't need one!" I glanced back up at the stairs and smiled weakly. "Stop saving me, Black Star. It's getting embarassing..." I whispered to myself.
"Tsubaki, Enchanted Sword Mode!" The blade of his weapon partner turned black and Black Star received tattoos on his face. I didn't have time to watch what the girl was doing. My eyes were practically locked on Black Star. All I know is that the two fought and the girl retreat. "You okay, Maka? Sheesh, you're always gettin' in trouble."
I nodded and stood up. "Are your wounds okay now?" He nodded and rubbed his arm. "Still aches a little, but it's bearable." I smiled and my attention turned to Tsubaki. Black Star was still in Enchanted Sword Mode. When he is, he's incredibly strong... I'm no where near his league.
Black Star noticed I was staring at his tattoos and he smirked. "What, like what you see?" I rolled my eyes and shoved him playfully. "Shut up." He chuckled and remained his posture. "How does it feel?" I asked. He arched a brow and I gestured to Tsubaki. "All that power. How does it feel?" He stretched and cancelled Enchanted Sword. "Feels great!"
We walked to school together and I hid my feelings. No. Not my feelings towards Black Star. Not love. My feeling of... being so weak in our Resonance Team. Kid's a shinigami, so he's obviously stronger. Then Black Star of course is the strongest attacker. They're great even without their weapon partners.
But what about me? I'm useless without Soul. I'm useless without having anyone with me. "Say, Maka. Who was that girl? She look familiar to you?" I shook my head. "No. She just suddenly came to me with a threat to kill me." He nodded and turned to Tsubaki. "Tsubaki, could you ask Kid's goofy dad 'bout this?"
She nodded with a smile and waved goodbye as she head to the Death Room. Geez! Leaving me with Black Star again? "You have to have someone with you at all times now. Who knows when she could attack you?" I nodded and looked down. Now Black Star thinks that I'm weak... "Let's go to class," Black Star offered.
Without a response, I simply faked a smile at him and walked to class. He followed me and we sat in our respectful seats. Soul arrived just in time and Tsubaki did as well. "Black Star. Maka-chan. Lord Death is calling for you two," she announced. I looked at Black Star, who was sitting on the higher area of the class, and he nodded at me.
The way to the Death Room was uncomfortably silent. But, luckily, it wasn't long. Black Star opened the door for me and I thanked him quietly. In the distance, we saw Lord Death staring into his mirror. Kid was next to him. Kid was first to notice our presence and Lord Death followed his son's gaze, turning to us.
"Well, Meister Maka. Looks like you're in a bit of pinch," he said with his cartoonish voice. "Why?" He moved aside, showing me his mirror. It was the girl from earlier. She was walking casually in Death City like nothing was wrong. "The girl you've encountered is a witch. Aquaila. Even though she has Soul Protect on, she's quite easy to locate."
I focused intently on her image in the mirror. "What's her magic theme?" I asked, bewildered. "That, I don't know yet. So you have to be on your highest guard. I'll also have Kid, Black Star and Soul to watch over you, alright?" I nodded and looked down.
No one trusts me anymore. They all think I'm weak. I'll prove them wrong...
..
..
Wait for me, Aquaila. Your soul is mine.
