You're My Star (Black Star X Maka)

New Students

*Maka's POV*

I yelped as my back hit one of the building's walls. "Have you had enough, Maka?" I shook my head. "I can't lose to you... It's all pointless if I do!" She arched a brow, "What're you talking about?" "If I'm not powerful enough to protect my friends, then.... I wouldn't be able to show my face in front of them ever again," I said, wobbling up weakly. 

"All of that confidence of your's going to waste... What can you do without Soul?" I looked to the side. What can I do? I can't do anything without him... "How about a wager, Maka?" She caught my attention and I looked up. "If you can defeat me without anyone with you within this week, I'll leave you alone. Sound good?"

"It depends. What if I don't defeat you?" She smriked menacingly and twirled her weapon in her hand freely. "If you don't... Then I'll take your precious little Black Star away from you." Her words had guillotine force. Black Star? How did she... "Don't," was all I could say. Instead, she just laughed and turned around. "You have a week, Maka. Meet me here at the same time whenever you want to try your hand, okay?" 

She snapped her fingers and I found myself standing in front of the academy. Now I really have to focus. If not, then Black Star... I shook my head and went on home. Maybe I'll talk to Soul about this... No... I can't. I'm not allowed to have anyone with me on this...

The next day of school was terrible. I had to avoid Black Star and it looks like I made him feel bad. I'm being a total tsundere to the rest of my friends and now there are two new student to join the fray. I feel like I'm gonna explode. And these new students... Seems familiar.

"Hello. My name is Layn Turbine. I'm a meister. It's nice to meet you all." Hm. She seems nice. And she won't stop smiling. Yeesh. She gestured to the girl next to her. "This is my weapon parter, Novo Lentum. She's mute, so I'll do her talking for her."

Since there weren't any seats available that were next to each other, the two separated. Novo sat next to me and Layn sat next to Black Star. Novo was really pretty. Despite that she's shy and mute, she looks like she's nice. I tapped her gently on the shoulder and she glanced to me with her eyes a tiny bit wider.

"Hi. I'm Maka." She smiled and bowed politely. Soul smirked and tilted his head to me. "Makin' new friends again, I see." I nodded and turned my attention back to Stein. Dissecting another poor animal. Honestly. What a pyscho. I glanced to Black Star's seat and found him chatting with Layn. 

Huh? What is this? It's like... my chest feels heavy. And my face is hot... Is this supposed to be... jealousy? It can't be. She's a new student and I bet they're just trying to get along. That's all. Heh... I saw Novo...chan at the corner of my eye. She clenched her skirt in her fists and looked down.

"Novo-chan? Is something wrong?" Her head shot up and she looked at me. She waved her hand in front of her face and smiled weakly. Something's bothering her. I put a hand on her shoulder and she flinched. I smiled warmly and squeezed her shoulder reassuringly, "If anything's bothering you, you can talk to me if you want." 

She blinked and nodded shyly. The bell rang and the students poured out of the room. I was about to leave with everyone else when Novo-chan tugged on my coat lightly. "What is it?" She handed me a note and I looked at it. Wow. Her handwriting is super pretty. It said:

"Layn-san has plans for the break. Do you mind if I stick with you for now? I don't know anybody yet around here yet."

I took her hands and squeezed gently. "Of course! You're our friend now!" I introduced her to everyone else and she got used to their company. She seemed to enjoy Kid's personality the most. He sat next to her in the cafeteria and he was totally inspired by her name. "Your name is from a Latin word, isn't it? Novo means 'change' if I'm correct."

She nodded and Kid smiled at her. How cute. Looks like Novo-chan has a little crush on Kid. But then again... Kid's been acting strange around me. Layn showed up and tapped Novo on the shoulder. She looked up and nodded, rather depressed. Without any words being said, she left with Layn somewhere. 

They're like total opposites. Layn has blue hair with black eyes and Novo has orange hair with soft blue eyes. Layn dressed like she wants to be noticed and Novo dresses timidly with simple clothes. I wonder why they partnered up in the first place.

Kid poked my cheek and I blushed for a moment. Tsubaki giggled and the twins snickered. "You're doing your thinking face again. What is it?" I shrugged, "I don't know. Just a little doubtful of Layn and Novo-chan. Layn looks like she bosses Novo-chan around a lot." 

Soul groaned next to me. "You're at it again. You're gonna go and try to find out why they're like that? It's pretty much your style, ain't it?" I pulled out a book and Soul backed away, apologizing silently. I mean, who wants a Maka-Chop, right?

I'm worried about Novo-chan. Maybe Layn is the one bothering her. I stood up from the table and went off to follow the two. I don't like to be too nosy, but still. There's something going on here.
