I'll never forget the day his breaths mingled with mine. We were at a party, a pool party, one of his friends family was having a bunch of people over.

The little kids wanted to play manhunt, and being the fun, admirable, amazing guy he was, Ryan gave in and managed to rally a few teenagers to play too.

He put me on his team. It was the first time I'd ever been first choice in a game. When I went over to him, he threw his arm around my neck, grinning.

His smile makes goosebumps on my skin, warm from the hot tub. A collision of opposites, an oxymoron, an impossibility. Cold in the heat.

Our team hid first. When the little kids scampered off, Ryan grabbed my hand and pulled me behind the pool house. I went willingly, heart pounding and nerves a flutter.

We collapsed on the ground, our faces close, and waited silently.

Our faces so close.

His breath brushed my lips, making them tingle. He leaned closer, the moonlight shone in his eyes and a small dimple poked out of his smirk. I allowed myself to give a little, my body leaning toward his like a magnet-- irreversible, undeniable and meant to be.

I never got to feel the contact of his lips on mine because we were interrupted by his phone lighting up in between us.

I had a chance to see the notification before he grabbed his phone away and sat up, making my lips and heart cold in his absence. Cold in the heat, yet again.

It was a text from Kate.
