We met up that night at Days Ice Cream, a small ice cream shoppe that's been located in Ocean Grove since my grandparents were little.

After small talk about what we were each going to order, we fell silent. We received our ice creams and went out to the porch and found a small table.

We awkwardly avoided conversation, both anxious and unsure what to say. Seeing a work friend outside of work was like seeing a teacher outside of school: weird and unappealing.

But our eyes met over our ice creams, and we smiled at each other. Our secret, hidden smiles, before staring down at our food, unable to hold eye contact.

I think I heard him chuckle once.

I might've giggled under my breath.

And suddenly the barrier was gone and we were a floodgate of talk.

That was the night we became Ellie and Ryan, in my head. We weren't dating, but suddenly we did everything together.
