Mudsplotch stretched. He could hear the mewling of his kits. He felt his brother stir beside him. My brother! I never had a brother? He turned to see who was by him. His mouth fell open.
"Sp...Sp...Splashclaw!" He yelped. Splashclaw stirred, and opened one eye.
"Yes- holy StarClan! What in the name of StarClan is going on? I thought we..." Splashclaw yelped back.
"Yeah..." Mudsplotch meowed, catching Splashclaw's drift. "How?" Splashclaw shook his head in bafflement.
"Let's ask around, but we can't give off that us being together is strange, unless they don't know one of us," Splashclaw meowed, Mudsplotch nodded in agreement. The two brothers walked out.
"Hey, Splashclaw and Mudsplotch... or is it Mudsplotch and Splashclaw?" Leaffall meowed. Leaffall's face was obviously confused. Since Splashclaw and Mudsplotch were the same cat for awhile, they looked identical. Splashclaw laughed.
"You'll never know," he teased, and to Mudsplotch he added, "I could get use to this." Leaffall left, baffled. Mudsplotch roughly nudged his brother.
"You shouldn't trick them!" He whispered to Splashclaw.
"But it's fun," Splashclaw pleaded. Mudsplotch snorted.
"It makes then very confused! You shouldn't do that!" He scolded. Splashclaw's ears went down in mock embarrassment, and he playfully sprang at his brother. The tussled on the branch.
"Good job Splashclaw! You've won again," Mudsplotch's mentor, Scalefur, called out.
"I'm Splashclaw, he's Mudsplotch!" The indignant Splashclaw, who lost and was on the bottom, meowed. Scalefur laughed.
"Whoops! Sorry, everybody, even your mother, gets you two confused!" He giggled. The two brothers both smiled, and Mudsplotch got off Splashclaw. Bramblestar called Splashclaw to his den. He wanted his son to be the next deputy. He'd give him one of his brother's and Tigerflower's kits. Splashclaw said yes.
"Let all cats old enough to climb gather beneath me to hear what I have to say," Bramblestar meowed. The clan soon gathered. "Our deputy, Shadowriver, had served us well. It is time for him to retire, and for us to appoint a new deputy. Splashclaw has been chosen by myself and Shadowriver to be the next deputy, and hopefully leader. That is highly probable since I am on my last life," the aging leader meowed. The clan cheered the new and old deputys' names, and cried out their leader's, even though their sorrow won't bring back his lives.
"Splashclaw will finish assigning patrols," Shadowriver meowed, his voice shaking and his muzzle grey. Mudsplotch had never realized how old the deputy was, and his father. Shadowriver retired his sleeping area. RiverClan didn't have an elders den, so the retired warriors still slept in the warriors den. Bramblestar went to go rest in his den, and Splashclaw went to go assign patrols. Tigerflower signaled for Mudsplotch to join her.
"Have you eaten yet?" She asked, rubbing her head against his.
"No," he purred. "We could share, if you want."
"I'd like that," she purred back, so the two shared a bird, which Mudsplotch brought. They talked, chatting about their kits, Gentlerain and Splashclaw, and other things in the clan's life. He soon had to hunt. By the time he got back with a few birds, it was already darkening. He flopped down in his sleeping place, and was soon sound asleep.
